Line Landscape Resist Paintings

During our exploration of line and shape, students learned about the elements of a landscape and created a landscape using a variety of different lines with oil pastel to create foreground, middle ground and background. They then used watercolor paint to create a resist, considering the use of warm and cool colors to emphasize different areas.

Mexican Hojalata Art

During our exploration of texture, students learned about a form of Mexican folk art called hojalata ("oh-ha-la-ta"), or tin art, from the Oaxaca region. Students created their own hojalata by drawing an animal and emobossing their drawing onto an aluminum metal sheet, using a stylus. Embossing is a technique where you carve, mold, or stamp a design on a surface, like paper or metal, so that it stands out in relief. Metal is pushed with an embossing tool, or stylus, to create a raised effect on the opposite side. Students included patterns and shapes to emphasize the texture of the raised metal. After embossing, students used colored Sharpie markers to add color, utilizing complementary colors to help their designs stand out. The embossed metal was hot glued to a background and students used metallic Sharpie to create a background or frame for their hojalata artwork.

Japanese Gyotaku Painting

During our exploration of color and texture, students learned about gyotaku, a method of printing fish which began in the 1800’s by Japanese fishermen. We made gyotaku with rubber fish, and used a variety of different techniques with watercolor paint, including wet-on-wet and salt, to create a background for the print.
