Google Earth in the Classroom

Google Earth:

Google Earth is now turned on for all Google users in the WHS domain. This is certainly not a new app but it has been updated with some great new tools. Voyager takes you to a whole new set of curated content with interactive tours. A new 3D button allows you to see a location from any angle. If you would like to add calculations to your tools, we can download Google Earth Pro as I have done in the Biology department. By the way, our WHS Virtual Reality system has a Google Earth “experience.” We used it recently with Spanish students to explore more deeply the Mexican border and immigration issues. We visited Brownsville, Texas, Nogales, El Paso, La Ciudad and Juarez, tying in information from the video "Which Way Home."

How to Use Google Earth for Beginner Teachers, Parents, Students

Google Earth Tutorial: Intro to Creation Tools for Student Projects

Google Earth calls itself "the world's most detailed globe".

Now, students can create tours, stories and more with Google Earth!

Here's how it works:

  1. Students create a new Google Earth project.

  2. They add pins to different locations.

  3. On each pin, they can add images, videos, links, text and more.

  4. When they're done, they can present the project or share it with a link.

You can also create collaborative Google Earth projects where each student in the class creates a pin on the same map!

In this post from Matt Miller, of Ditch That Textbook, we learn step-by-step how to use Google Earth and 10 ideas for using Google Earth's new tools in class!

Google Earth Virtual Reality

We also have Google Earth VR set up on our HTC Vive system. Come check it out! This fall Google added Street View to the Google Earth VR experience. With a new update, users can check out Street View images from 85 countries provided by the Street View team as well as pictures shared by others from around the world. To get there, while in Earth VR, zoom down closer to the street level and see if your controller says there's Street View imagery available. If so, you can then view the area within a 360 degree photo.
