Description:

• An articulation Disorder is an abnormal production of speech sounds that are not typical for a student’s chronological age. These sound errors are not the result of a regional dialect or accent. A student might be substituting one sound for another (e.g., “finking” for “thinking”), omitting one sound completely, or distorting the sound production.

• A Phonological Processing Disorder is when a student’s sound errors demonstrate a specific pattern of production. The following are a few examples of phonological processes:

• • Fronting - a student consistently substitutes /t/ for /k/ or /d/ for /g/ (e.g., “tat” for “cat” or “do” for “go”).

  • Cluster reduction - a student leaves out a sound in a blend (e.g., “bock” for “block” or “sake” for “snake”).

  • Final consonant deletion - a student consistently deletes the final sound in words (e.g., “bu” for “bus”).

Activities:

• Have your child practice 10 words/sentences from his/her speech book/folder while correctly producing his/her target sound(s).

• Have your child practice using his/her target sound(s) in conversation while discussing events from the day.

• Have your child practice using his/her target sound(s) while reading aloud from any book of choice for five minutes.
