Description:
Phonological Awareness is the ability to hear, discriminate, remember, and manipulate sounds at the phoneme, syllable, word, and sentence level.
Activities:
Have your child participate in rhyming activities (i.e. Tell me a word that rhymes with "cat").
Have your child blend sounds to form words that you present one sound at a time (i.e. Parent says: "B"... "A"... "T" and child says "Bat.").
Have your child clap/count out syllables in a word (i.e. How many syllables (beats) do you hear in the word "umbrella"?).
Present two words and ask your child if the words rhyme (i.e. bat/cat vs. bat/ball).
