Description:
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is used to describe various methods of communication that help students who are non-verbal, minimally verbal, or have reduced speech intelligibility to communicate effectively.
Activities:
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to request preferred/needed items around the house (i.e. food, toys, clothing, bathroom, etc.).
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to request assistance (i.e. help) when intentionally given a difficult task.
Have your child use core vocabulary words on their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards during play activities (i.e. open, go, more, in, out, all done, etc.).
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to describe how they are feeling (i.e. happy, sad, mad).
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to take turns (i.e. my turn / your turn) while playing a game or with a desired toy.
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to greet family members (i.e. Hi, Mommy!).
Have your child use their AAC device/PECS book/communication boards to label common items throughout your house (i.e. book, crayon, ball, car, etc.).
