Description:
Oral expression is the ability to effectively and efficiently communicate one’s wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas using age-appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. It is important to note that oral expression does not refer to reading aloud or reading fluently. Oral language, however, provides the foundation for literacy development and is essential for one’s overall success in school.
Activities:
Have your child explain "how to" sequences in 3 or more steps using sequential terms such as first, next, then, last (i.e. brushing your teeth, getting ready for bed, making a sandwich, etc.).
Play a category game (i.e. name five ocean animals, name five fruits, name five tools, name five types of transportation, etc.).
Have your child choose an object and describe it using three different clues for you or a sibling to guess (i.e. "This is a type of fruit. It is red. It has a core. What is it?").
Have your child describe the main character in a story they are reading using specific character traits (i.e. Winn Dixie - active & funny. Opal - compassionate & caring.).
Play action-based charades with your child and have them guess what you are doing (i.e. running, jumping, etc.).
