TRIO Program
Drakes Creek Middle School
Documentary
We created a documentary about the TRIO program because we believe that this program will help students be prepared for college, and have an idea of where they want to go and what they want to study. It will show the importance of thinking of college ahead of time and to learn ways to afford it.
To begin, we all had to brainstorm ideas on what to film for a documentary. We all came together in order to think of what we could do for our film. We had to think of an idea on how we could provide a documentary with meaning for students. We then figured that we could do a film about the TRIO program, which helps students learn more about college and how to get into it.
Then we emailed Dr. Brausch to ask if we could film him and some students at our feeder high school, Greenwood. This would give us an opportunity to show our students what the TRIO program does.
While we were interviewing the high school students, we asked them questions about what they plan to do in college, what the TRIO program taught them, and more. We also interviewed Dr. Brausch and asked him questions about the goals and missions of the TRIO program.
Next, we reviewed the footage and downloaded it to Canva to begin editing. After that, we started to edit the video. We added all the clips we recorded and arranged them in a way to flow good. While editing, we typed the questions on the slides to remove the voices in the background of us asking questions to the students and Dr. Brausch. Adding the questions on the slide makes the audio run smoother.
We made credits of the students we interviewed and made music credits.
The audience for our documentary is aimed at upcoming and present high schoolers, especially ones whose parents didn’t go to college.
The purpose of our documentary is to share college opportunities for high school students by introducing them to the TRIO program, where they can find out what college they want to go to and how to increase their chances of getting into college. This can make both upcoming and current high schoolers feel better about their future.
A problem we encountered was that after filming, our video was too long. To fix this problem, we cut down what we included in the final video, and left the most important information in our segment.
What we enjoyed most about creating this documentary was how much it will impact students’ futures. We also liked getting to know the people we interviewed and what they were interested in studying in college.
