This unit is about understanding the things that make our local area special in terms of the science concepts related to our awa, moana, whenua and the living things that reside here, this includes key ideas such as kaitiakitanga, ecology, biodiversity, geology, earth structures, earth systems and water chemistry.
Complete the 3 tasks below in your exercise books/digitally on a doc as 3 brainstorms;
Look at the images on the left, brainstorm ways in which they interact or connections you can think of between any of the images; do some thinking 💭, discussing💬 and writing ✍ of these ideas in your books. Add these to the class brainstorm on the whiteboard or jamboard.
Do some thinking 💭, discussing💬 and writing ✍ of 10 environment related things that make 'Our Place' (Waitara/Taranaki) special/different to other areas. Eg. Near Mt Taranaki - dormant volcano. Add these to the class brainstorm on the whiteboard or jamboard
Do some thinking 💭, discussing💬 and writing ✍ of 10 environmental impacts that have been caused by humans in our local area. Add these to the class brainstorm on the whiteboard or jamboard
1.1- Intro to ideas
1. 👉Prior Knowledge - what you might know already - there are 4 key 'spheres' that make up the earth - any ideas of what they are?
2. 👀 Watch one or more of the video clips below to learn about the 4 spheres; or use this Spheres of Earth info sheet
3. ✍ Complete an Earth Systems mind map about the 4 spheres that make up earth in your exercise book/digitally with details of what makes up each sphere, see the examples on the right if you are unsure about mind mapping.
1.2- Linking Earth systems to Te Ao Maori
1. ✍ Check your understanding about the 4 spheres of earth by completing this worksheet - The Earth's 4 Spheres
2. 👀Look at the two images on the right, see how you could make links between the concept of Te ao maori - creation narratives and the 4 earth system ideas you learnt earlier. Summarise any connections or ideas in a table. See example below.
Or make a copy of this worksheet below and complete it. Te Ao Maori & Spheres of the earth
1.3- Earth's systems in Waitara
1. Complete the worksheet below by applying the ideas of the earth's systems to our place (Waitara/Taranaki)
Local examples worksheet, make a copy and save to your Science folder.
5.1 - The importance of our reefs
Do some - Thinking 💭, discussing💬 and writing ✍ about the importance of our reef ecosystems to local people in waitara.
3 reasons the reef is important,
2 things we could do to protect it,
1 issue it might face in the future
5.2 - Orapa reef & seagrass
✍ Check your understanding of the learning about the reef ecosystem by completing this worksheet (make a copy of it and place it in your year 10 Science folder)
Applying your ecology learning to a local environment
👀 watch the video below about seagrass and why it is special.
5.3 Processing collected data
Use the data collected from the reef trip (found in the images below) and process it by filling out the tables in the following google sheet (make a copy and place it in your year 10 Science folder) then complete calculations of means.
