This unit we have concentrate on friendship, the impact of influential individuals, and many practical learning tasks, in the practice tasks, it including a one-minute speech, grammar and vocabulary exercises, readings of Red Eyes, best friend, most influential person, Fish Cheek, and explorations of SDG 4. Through these experiences, I have improve both my language skill and the connection between, this is what I want to write in my reflection
Most influential person
In this assignment we need to write a essay about which person have impact or influential you the most, in this essay. I also write about my brother, this time I mostly concentrate on educational part. The story are mostly talking about how my brother help me on my study and help me know how important of different test is for the college.
Red Eyes
We have read through one to six chapters, and after we have done a chapter test on Red Eyes. The test is mostly based on reading comprehension. From now on, this story is talking about Veer, the main character. He had been bullied by his boarding school classmates, and he ran out of the school and wanted to find his father, who worked as a forest officer in Suryanagar. Upon arriving in the forest area, he was both curious and cautious of the unfamiliar environment. Through interactions with the forest guides, he gradually learned about the survival rules. One evening, while he was getting water by the river, Veer discovered a naked girl hanging upside down from a tree. Her eyes glowed with a red light, and she could communicate images to Veer through telepathy. Veer named her Medha and realized that this girl was not a normal human.
Fish Cheeks
This short story is about a short memory of Amy Tan. It recounts her 14-year-old embarrassment when her Chinese family hosts an American boy she has a crush on, serving traditional Chinese dishes, food like Tofu, fish cheeks. It makes her feel embarrassed compared to Western food, and she realizes later that her mother cooked those dishes to honor her culture.
SDG 4
It was mean that everyone have the same opportunities on learning, and everyone could afford on a good education.
One minute speech
This topic is my best friend. In the speech, I have chosen one of my best friends from my last school, and I have talked about what we did, how we met, and why he is my best friend. I think this time I have improved from the last one-minute speech; I could tell the story very easily. But there are still some problems with my grammar.
Things I Can Improve On
After looking at my work, I found three specific things to get better at. First, in my one-minute speech about “the most important person in my life,” I have too many words like "and, errrr", and I have paused a lot while doing my speech. Second, when I talked about Red Eyes, my knowledge about the story wasn’t deep enough; I was only taking what happened, but didn’t link the characters to bigger ideas. Third, I made mistakes with grammar in my writing, especially when using the past perfect tense. These clear things to fix will help me learn the language better later.
Links to Other School Work
I connected this unit’s work to other classes and projects. For the SDG 4 it connect to our PBL class, in the PBL will have take about the indigenous people don't have the same eduation, and we have talk about a little bit of equality eduaction, we talk about the adding point system of indigenous people, it connect to SDG 4 by they don't have the same eduation as the Han people, so we need to help them out, and got the equal right of eduaction, and they could got a good equality education. And the one-minute speech, it connects to our Chinese class, one of our homework assignments is to use 1-2 minutes to summarize a story, and it was very similar to a one-minute speech in English class.
Better Habits for Learning
One habit I got better at is “focused practice for speaking tasks.” At first, I memorized my one-minute speech word for word, which made it sound very bad and not nature. To fix this, I tried a new way: I memorized only the key words, which could remind my memory what I wanted to talk about, and I could even expand the speech on it. This method made my speech smoother and saved me time on practicing.
Using Classmates’ Advice
When we are doing group discussion, when other student have spoken their opinion, when I feel that his idea is different than mine, I will discuss and find out who has a better opinion and solution on this question. If they have a good enough opinion, it could change my idea.
My Growth and Future Goals
This unit helped me understand friendship and influence better. From Fish Cheek, I learned that different cultures have their own cultural habit and things. Learning about SDG 4 also made me have a different opinion than I did in the past. I have somehow wanted to be a teacher in the future; it may change the quality of education, and it could help our future even better. And this fits my goal of becoming someone who helps others grow. For English learning, my future goals are pretty clear. I want to get better and gain more words. When I'm reading many words, I don't know the definition, so it's hard to read easily. For reading, I want to improve my knowledge of many new words to make my reading easier. And for my writing, I have many grammatical mistakes, and I lack some good words, so I can't write a good article. The main goal is to learn many new words, which can improve my skills in writing and reading.
