What science concept from your uploaded work helps explain an environmental or sustainability issue?
A science concept that I learnt from creating this poster is the island theory. This theory explains that small or isolated habitats support fewer species and are easier to damage. This is both a sustainability and environmental issue as construction can cause plants and animals to lose part of their habitat, reducing biodiversity and making recovery harder.
How could this science influence real-world decisions when designing buildings or planning cities?
We could try to prevent breaking large habitats into different isolated areas. When designing a city, we could create protected areas or connect habitats with green corridors so that plants and animals can move between ecosystems.

What concept, skill, or assignment from that class relates to the science idea you explored?
Our final project involving Haiti can relate to the science idea we explored because we studied how Haiti and the Dominican Republic interact, relating to the idea of how the environment interacts with each other and how human interference can change it.
Wind energy can create good paying jobs, enable economic growth, is a renewable source of energy, benefits local communities, is cost effective, and works in different settings. However, wind still has competition with other low-cost energy sources, with wind sites often being in remote locations. Additionally, turbines produce noise and can alter the visual landscape while also impacting the local wildlife.
Our initial wind turbine design was built on a structure of cups with a wooden stick going through it. Attached to it was 3 cardboard cutouts that acted as wind turbines. We tested our turbine by putting the fan up against it and seeing if it would spin. Our turbine didn't move in the slightest. I think the problem was the turbines being to heavy, and the friction of the cups against the wood causing it not to move. We made the turbine too slowly causing us to not be able to make any changes to it.
It reduces pollution, greenhouse gases, and creates jobs. However, it may harm wildlife, change landscapes, create noise pollution, and some people may just not like how they look. Turbines cost a ton to produce, but they are cheap to run. It can be a good energy solution as it is clean, renewable, and sustainable.
We recieved feedback on how we were going to pull up the cup, initially by just blowing on it. However, after recieving feedback and seeing other people's designs, we made a pulley system. This still didn't work as we made the turbines too heavy and the friction of the cup and the wooden stick further contributed to it not spinning.
