This assignment was done to show our understanding of the seven elements of art (Colour, value, line, shape, texture, space, form). We were asked to create a collage using materials from different magazines. We chose SDG 10 to be the inspiration for our collage.
For this assignment, we had to redesign the Taiwanese $1000 Bill by adding an underrepresented person or group from Taiwanese history whose work connects with an SDG goal. We chose to feature Qu Quanli, who made "Taiwan Superman" inspired by the Brazilian Bill.
This is one of the first moodboards we made. We later improved it to connect more to our topic after changing it to walking paths and the visually impaired. This assignment was made to help us be inspired for what our design was going to be and the overall vibe of our project.
Project Pitches V1
For this assignment, we had to pitch a proposal for our final PBL project idea. The idea we presented was to create an affordable and accessible housing market for the disabled. Our slide includes a charter of what we will be working on, research on the topic, the charity we plan to work on, a moodboard, a word cloud, and our plan for the tangible design.
Project Pitch V2
After receiving feedback from the first project pitch, we changed our topic to creating more inclusive accessibility tools for the visually impaired. We made new research, picked a new organization, improved our charter by adding a timeline, made a new mood board, provided a short magazine outline, and change our tangible design to fit our topic more.
Logo Design Process
For the first step of the logo design process, we made 50 simple sketches, brainstorming what we wanted our logo to be. After this, we chose 3 of the designs we liked the most and made 3 rough sketches of these designs. We got critique from our classmates and then made a final design of the logo we thought was the best. For the final step, we made 4 sub-designs of our original design, each with a different element of art.
Brand Kit
The brand kit was made to act as a guide for the design of our magazine. It includes our logo, typography system (fonts), colour palette, and photographs to set the mood.
The main project I think could be improved is the currency redesign. This is because of the rushing we needed to do to replace Woody Shin with Qu Quanli. It also didn't help that Kevin had an AP Test during the making of Woody Shin meaning he couldn't work on it.
After presenting our first project pitch, we received feedback on it. This led us to pick a more specific topic, improve our tangible design, and add a plan for the magazine. We also learnt about what terminology we should use while talking about the visually impaired.
This connects to my previous PBL project, where my topic was about sidewalks and tactile paving.
Comparing these projects to the past, my knowledge of how to format PBL projects has expanded, and I feel like I've been putting in more effort into my projects compared to past PBL projects.
I still need to improve my time management. This includes every class, but especially in PBL because it's where all the big projects are. I plan to start using a calendar to plan when I will do my homework assignments. Something I need to keep in mind is not to underestimate how much time it will take to complete an assignment, as I tend to do that a ton.
The social justice issue we are focusing on is to create more inclusive accessibility tools, mainly tactile pavement and walking paths, for the visually impaired in Taipei. The main group of people affected by this issue are visually impaired people in Taipei. This issue is local because of the number of underdeveloped sidewalks that plague Taiwan, causing boundaries and inequality for the visually impaired.
As the semester began, I had a basic understanding of graphic design, but I didn't totally understand how we were going to use it for a PBL project. Over the seven weeks, I have begun to understand how we are going to use graphic design by making a magazine that people will read. This magazine will hopefully change people's understanding of our topic and make them look at it from a different perspective. The most important thing I have learnt is the elements of art.
