Now that you have all your pieces picked out, it’s once again time to check the college websites (those that do prescreens, some don’t) and see what specifics they ask for for filming ratios.
For Example, one school could ask for shoulders up:
Other schools can ask for the full body:
Or something like chest up, or half body:
Some schools can even be weird and ask for ¾ shot:
It all really depends on what they’re looking for. In any shot, though particularly the full body shots, make sure that you have enough space to move around! That’s the death of a lot of people’s auditions because no one wants to just see a teen standing in one spot doing hand gestures for a minute or two. Never be afraid to get into your body! It will help ground you more than you think. Just learn from my mistakes and make sure that your camera will catch all of your movements and you don’t go off-screen, that was a pain in the butt.
There’s also the incredibly common question of how many takes you should do. However, the answer really depends on the person. If you’re someone who tends to knit-pick every little thing when you watch yourself performing, then you could do that or you could use the tactic of limiting yourself to only a certain number of takes, which significantly lessens filming time and gets you less in your head about the whole process. Meanwhile, I am someone who tends to make many (often hilarious) mistakes during filming, so many takes are necessary for my process. The first time you film can be a good indicator of which person you are, so develop whatever system feels like it works the best for you!
