When you’re applying to schools, it’s always the best idea to try to audition in person so you can really be in the room with the people who are interviewing you and form a really personal connection with them, plus auditioning in person is always so much fun and you get to travel all over the place. However, if you have a tight schedule or if the school you’re applying to only does in-person auditions on their campus (I’m looking at you UMich), you’re usually assigned to Zoom auditions!
Zoom auditions, unlike in-person auditions, have a few more requirements. The dress code stays the same, but you have to plan more for the angles of the computer camera for your monologues and songs, and sometimes you even have to do Zoom dance auditions, although those are rare.
The thing to keep in mind apart from those requirements is that you’re still going into that Zoom room and making a connection with the people you’re auditioning for, it’s just more challenging now. Just let your personality shine through and make sure you take notes well, and you’ll be absolutely fine.
Some odd tips:
Test your audio and camera before you get on Zoom, things can change very quickly and it’s better to be prepared than have to scramble during your audition.
To shoe or not to shoe? I wore socks in several of my Zoom auditions because the camera angles I needed didn’t show my feet, but it’s all a matter of comfort, whatever helps make you feel nice and grounded for your performance.
