Passion Project Ideas
計劃
Write, direct, shoot, and edit a personal 4–5 minute short film about your life, identity, or community in Hong Kong
Use Film Stylo (by Babel Film Workshop) or a similar framework: simple guidelines, clear deadline, and a chance to be part of an anthology feature screened publicly (Or publish on platforms like YT/Instagram)
Keep a production journal (script drafts, shot lists, edits, reflections) and write a 3–5 page “director’s statement” on what you learned about storytelling and filmmaking
🏫 Why it’s good for uni: Shows you can complete a full creative project from idea to screen, think visually, and reflect critically!
Plan a 3–5 episode mini‑doc series (3–6 mins each) profiling local creatives (a friendly street photographer, a busker, a small café owner, an artist friend etc.)
For each episode/video: research, pre‑interview, shoot B‑roll, conduct an on‑camera interview, edit, and add subtitles
Publish on YouTube/Instagram and create a simple website or portfolio page with synopses, stills, and a short reflection
🏫 Why it’s good for uni: Demonstrates research, interviewing, shooting, and editing skills, plus an understanding of documentary ethics and storytelling
Design a 2–3 session workshop for your school on media literacy like how algorithms shape what we see, how to spot misinformation, and how to fact‑check like a journalist
Create slides, short example videos, and a simple “fact‑checking checklist” handout; run a live demo where students analyse viral posts or news clips
Collect feedback, refine the workshop, and optionally turn it into a short guide or video series
🏫 Why it’s good for uni: Shows critical thinking about media systems, ability to teach complex ideas clearly, and social impact
Tag @YourStudySurvival if you carry out any of these ideas! 😉
Choose 1–2 iconic Hong Kong film locations (e.g., Central escalators, Temple Street, Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront)that have appeared in well‑known local films
Write, direct, shoot, and edit a 2–4 minute short film that is inspired by or set in those locations, using them as a key part of your story and visual style
Document your process like location scouting notes, shot list, a short “director’s commentary” video, and a 2–3 page reflection on how place shapes storytelling!
Optionally submit to school festivals, Film Stylo, or local youth showcases!
🏫 Why it’s good for uni: Shows strong visual storytelling, understanding of place and mise‑en‑scène, project management, and creative initiative
