“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” — Elizabeth Andrew
We all know that volunteering is a great matter back in the USA where actually each and every single one of us had at least volunteered in their community and came back with that mentality and spirit to implement in our own lovely country Lebanon that somehow lacks it.
In Surinam, our fellow alumnus Ryvann Soerohardjo YES 2014-2015 was highly inspired by his community and the organizations he volunteered with back in the United States that lead him to implement multiple projects in his community saying:
“My ultimate goal is to have a great impact on my entire community with no one and nothing left behind.”
He included everything and anyone in his projects, all people, animals and the nature.
Ryvann stated: “In the US I learned a lot about leadership. A leader is someone who is able to get people together and work with them to achieve a goal. That is why I gather, not only alumni, but also friends and other people in the community to make our projects magical!”
"We are the future and the base of this country, so let us start thinking outside our comfort zone and get things DONE!!"
Ryvann’s work focused on many aspects and got work done:
1. He gathered alumni to walk around the town with a purpose in celebration of Global Youth Service Day and they picked up litter to show they can take pride in keeping their environment clean!
2. He celebrated Valentine’s Day at an elderly home and spread love and careness to those in need.
3. In Celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Day, a group of YES alumni gathered and informed children of ages 12-16 because they believed that it’s an important topic that is not being discussed in their community and that targeting this age is a way by itself of spreading awareness through the future youth.
4. Most importantly, YES friends are people that join the YES alumni and help them out with projects and the help they contribute are in different forms like volunteers and show support through donations.
One person alone came up with all of these ideas and amazing events so can you imagine the ideas and events we can come up with if we all worked together!
