Place in History - In 1998 when Shawn Michaels left after losing to Steve Austin, he was widely regarded for his in-ring ability and widely hated for his attitude and behavior. When he exited after losing to the Undertaker in 2010, Shawn Michaels was no longer vilified and his incredible in-ring performances over the previous eight years had cemented his legacy. Michaels came up in an era where he was considered too small and too bland to be much more than a tag team performer. He and partner Marty Jannetty were an amazing tandem with a rep for their out-of-the-ring wildness. When the two split and Michaels repackaged himself as a heel, it was obvious he was already a top worker. Over the next few years, the WWF began focusing more on smaller performers and the "Heartbreak Kid" was one of the benefactors. He had the best matches and eventually was given the WWF title. Injuries and personal problems took their toll on him and although he and DX were pivot in the early Attitude Era, Michaels would be on the self for most of it. As the WWE had begun its decent, Michaels returned and had several more years of strong performances. He was a changed man and buried many hatchets to affirm his place as one of the greatest pro-wrestlers of all-time.
