While the action in the ring gets most of the attention, professional wrestling is driven by plenty of figures outside of the ring. Most significant are promoters, the individuals who have owned and operated companies. Managers took on an increasingly important role in the second half of the twentieth century as characters who drove interest as pro-wrestling became more based around angles. Announcers were crucial to the television product as the people helping explain the wrestlers, the action and the stories to the audience. Referees, while sometimes unseen, play a key role in matches and many held key positions within the office.
