This video is a little overview of "midget pro-wrestling" (the term "midget" has been used historically, although it has been deemed politically incorrect in modern times) including the notable personalities who toured North America and became big attractions. This brand of pro-wrestling has been criticized for its gimmickry, lack of seriousness and business-exposing spots, yet its practitioners have been credited for their athleticism and the genre for its ability to draw big houses by bringing in families. "Midget wrestling" was understandably popular with children from the "Golden Age" through the WWF's national expansion. Canadians dominated the genre as promoter Jack Britton became its promoter much like Buddy Wolfe with women's wrestling. In time, Lord Littlebrook took over that role, comparable to the Fabulous Moolah. Although it largely died out in the US, it was revitalized in Mexico. Mexico employed a different approach as their miniestrellas became mini versions of the superstars of lucha libre. From Mascarita Sagrada and Octogoncito on the technicos' side to the Espectritos, on the rudos' side, the miniestrellas provided great entertainment in AAA's and later CMLL's midcards. Combining breathtaking highspots and signature comedy, this brand was destined to come back to the States. Both WCW and WWF tried using the minis during the Monday Night Wars and the WWF even tried repackage them. Almost a decade later, the minis were brought back again briefly by the WWF leading to the reoccurring Hornswoggle character. His background however was in the extreme independent variety of "midget wrestling" that had cropped up in the late-90s. Although the minis continue to do well in Mexico, this genre seems destined to only have sporadic runs in the US due to the perceived limitations of the act. The touring troupe system that used to draw well around North America is gone and perhaps the genre with it.
