Pure-blood Southern Residents who were killed during capture, escaped from capture, or died after transfer to marine facilities
Number of Individuals: 49 (0 living; 49 deceased- 21 female, 22 male, 6 unknown gender)
NOT INCLUDED: This count does not include Lolita/Tokitae/Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut or J24 Canuck/Eltanin, as they have been included previously in L and J Pod, respectively.
NOTE ON AGES: Some ages, namely those for individuals who died during capture, have been calculated based on a calculated growth rate from captive Pacific killer whales of 38cm/yr until ages 12-16 in males and 9-12 in females (see sources for further info). Thus, if the length was > 6.9m , the individual was likely older than 12-16 at the time of death. If the length was <6.9m, age was calculated as: (length - 2.4)/0.38
NO# (1962) (Female; >1947?-1962 (>15?))
Killed during a capture attempt in Haro Strait in September of 1962 as an adult, one of the first attempts to live capture killer whales for display. Frank Brocato, Boots Calandrino, and Mark Munoz were sent to try to capture whales for MarineLand of the Pacific. They found two whales, NO# (1962) and a male who were chasing a harbor porpoise. Calandrino managed to lasso the female, but the female fought back and the rope got tangled in the propeller. When the female reached the end of the 76.2m (250ft) rope, she started emitting loud, distressed vocalizations. Both she and the male started charging and tail slapping at the boat. Brocato, fearing for his life, shot NO# (1962) 10 times with a 375-magnum rifle, killing her. The adult male that was with NO# (1962) was shot once and retreated. Her body was towed to Bellingham, Washington, where it was weighed and measured. She had eaten about 150lbs of salmon before her death, indicating that she was a Resident. Brocato removed her teeth as souvenirs and the rest of her body was used as dog food. As female orcas reach sexual maturity at age 15, her age has been put down as such. Her age is just an estimate and she easily could have been older or younger than this estimate

This was not her first sign of aggressive behavior as she had been aggressive towards others not wearing wet suits. In mid May, she was moved to a new stadium and began training there.
