The Southern Resident Community is a three-pod, salmon-eating population comprising 75 individuals (as of July 2023). The three pods are as follows: J Pod (25 individuals), K Pod (16 individuals), and L Pod (32 individuals).
J Pod is usually seen year-round in the Salish Sea. There are currently 25 pod members with the youngest calf, female J59, who was born between 02/27/2022 and 03/01/2022 to J37 Hy'Shqa!
K Pod is the smallest pod with only 16 members and is at its lowest level in the last two decades. There was an 11-year gap between the births of K44 Ripple, born in 2011 to K27 Deadhead, and K45 Uhura/Prosper, born in 2022 to K20 Spock.
L Pod is the largest pod with 35 individuals, yet they are at their lowest levels since the study began. They are the least often seen of the three pods and have been documented as far south as Monterey Bay California and as far north as Southeast Alaska. The oldest living member in the SRKW population is L25 Ocean Sun, (estimated to have been born in 1928). The pod's newest calves are L126, born to L119 Joy, and L127, born to L94 Calypso!
