Becoming a Special Olympics Athlete. The process for registering as a Special Olympics Athlete has changed, effective May 4, 2026. All Athletes (or Parent/Guardian) will set up an account in the new Athlete Portal and complete a profile and provide medical and contact information. A visit to a medical professional is no longer required. Helpful information to get started at Athlete Portal.
Registration for Specific Sports Registration for sports offered by the Blazing Stars can be completed on this website. Blazing Stars sports registration information is announced via email and posted on the web page of each sport at least 45 days prior to the start of the season. Registration is completed online by clicking on a registration button. (Note: Registration for sports offered by other delegations should be done through the other delegations' websites or email. Use this link to view other delegation contact information.)
Most sports have a registration fee of $40 per athlete. Registration includes a $20 Special Olympics tournament fee. The team waives fees for athletes who request support.
There are four steps to become a Special Olympics Coach:

Create an account in the new Coach Portal. Instructions and link to portal at https://specialolympicsminnesota.org/special-olympics-registration-portal/
Complete the Level 1 Training and Application Process with Special Olympics Minnesota. The process is online in the Coach Portal and provides prompts and feedback throughout the process. Level 2 Training for individual sports is also available.
Complete a background check. Following completion of Level 1 Training, Special Olympics Minnesota will send you an email to initiate the background check.

Volunteer a few hours a month to support our team and reach more athletes, their families and friends. The Blazing Stars is a led by volunteers who are willing to share their skills and experience to plan, complete administrative tasks, manage digital tools like email, the website and online processes, fundraise, manage equipment, secure practice facilities, plan social events, and other activities for team.
