Who can join Special Olympics?

Traditional athletic training competition is open to open to every person with intellectual disabilities who is at least eight years of age and who registers to participate in Special Olympics as required by the Special Olympics General Rules. Read the Special Olympics Minnesota Statement of Eligibility.

Adults can become a Special Olympics volunteer coach or member of the Blazing Stars Local Sports Management Team. Some sports are "unified," combining athletes of all abilities. 

Do I have to live in South Washington County to join the Blazing Stars?

No. While many of our athletes live in Cottage Grove, Newport, Woodbury, and St. Paul Park, athletes from other communities play on one or more of our teams.

How do I find out about sports that are offered?

Sports season information is sent out via email and is posted on this website. Join our mailing list by sending an email to woodburyblazingstars@gmail.com.

What does is cost to join the Blazing Stars?

All athletes pay a registration fee for each sport, typically $40. The amount includes a $20 tournament fee. The Blazing Stars will waive fees if an athlete requests support.

Who can I contact with a question?

Blazing Stars volunteers monitor email and voicemail (information listed in footer below) and will contact you as soon as they are able.

Can the Blazing Stars Team offer more sports?

We offer sports based on the interests of athletes, volunteer support, availability of practice facilities and budget. We do have relationships with other teams, allowing athletes to participate in sports not offered by our team. The Blazing Stars also welcomes athletes for sports not offered by their home teams. 

How often is practice?

Teams typically practice weekly for 10 weeks. Most practices are held on a weekday night and last for one hour. Regional competition is normally held on a Saturday or Sunday. State competitions are held on weekends and can last one or two days. 

Who does the coaching?

All Blazing Stars coaches are volunteers. Learn about becoming a coach here.

Who pays for equipment, practice facilities, etc.?

The Blazing Stars is a volunteer organization affiliated with Special Olympics Minnesota. As a team, we are responsible for our annual budget and fundraising. Budget items include practice facility rental, equipment and uniforms, and competition fees.
