The 2022 Wildcat Pulling Team

The Wildcat Pulling Team

The Wildcat Pulling Team holds legacy of being a top competitor at the ASABE International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition each year.

The team was founded in 1996 and has competed in 21 competitions over the years. In the 2021-2022 competition, the team placed 3rd overall.

Wildcat 3122 Drivetrain Faults

  • Out of tolerance gear shifter resulted in only the partial engagement of reverse gear.

  • Centrifugal clutch engagement point was at such a high engine speed that small movements were not feasible without extensive slipping of the clutch.

  • During the final pull, the transmission began to grind and pop just before reaching the end of the pull. Driver reported that it felt like the transmission was binding up.

  • Design judges were very concerned with the serviceability of the clutch’s belt drive system.

  • Even at low engine speeds, electric clutch engagement was very harsh and resulted in a very rough engagement of the drivetrain if the tractor was not already in motion.

  • The clutch cover was very difficult to remove and reinstall during technical inspections. It was also very heavy which negatively affected the tractor’s overall weight utilization.

  • Design judges complained that the gear shifting mechanism was not intuitive and could easily result in transmission damage due to accidental operator error.

  • 2nd and 3rd gears were both too low in terms of gear reduction to be usable during the pulling events. This led the team to only have one pulling gear option which was not ideal.

  • The set screw on the upper quick disconnect coupler backed out. This resulted in the coupler shifting on the shaft which shredded the mating urethane split cover.
