I have represented Precinct 8 in Town Meeting since 2017, and have lived in Winchester since 2001. I have two children at McCall. Most recently, I served as a member of the Town Meeting Communications Study Committee, which met over 40 times, sometimes for hours. It was gratifying to do this important work, digging deep on complex issues, and bringing balance to our discussions. Many of us - including myself - have remained active since the Committee was dissolved in November, staying in touch with town staff regarding our recommendations, and working on multiple independent volunteer projects to help improve communication and civic engagement in Winchester.
Generally, my 'fiscal' inclinations are more conservative. I believe it is required of me to ask questions, distinguish "needs" from "wants", and prioritize long-term sustainability. On the 'social' side, I believe that if we want to make the world a better place, there is no substitute for each of us making the extra effort to get to know (and become friends with!) all kinds of different people, with all kinds of different points of view.
As a Town Meeting member and resident of Winchester, I favor funding for capital maintenance projects, particularly things like building and bridge maintenance, and water and sewer repair projects. I am also sensitive to the health of our environment. However, despite my strong personal interest in reduced noise and pollution, and my appreciation for the hard work and objectives of the proponents, I recently voted to postpone consideration of a partial ban on gas-powered leaf-blowers, largely because the tech is just not there yet, plus an array of logistical and financial concerns. I also recently voted in favor of a zoning amendment, to increase homeowners' leeway to build accessory dwelling units, with the limited objective of enabling aging residents and disabled children to remain living at home. In fact, I would have liked to see the changes go further - hopefully that will come.
I hope that members of Precinct 8 will support me, and help me continue to support them, as a Town Meeting member for a new term. In any case, please VOTE, and encourage your friends and neighbors as well!
