All City Drill Competition(ACDC), is an annual competition, in which Army JROTC Battalions from the LA County convene at Monroe Highschool and compete against one another in drill precision. Each school was encouraged to compete in all of the 5 events; Company Regulation Drill Team, Platoon Regulation Drill Team, Squad Regulation Drill Team, Unarmed Exhibition Drill Team, and Armed Exhibition Drill team.
Company drill involves the largest number of cadets marching in unison. Throughout the JROTC career, almost every cadet is bound to participate in company drill at least once. It consists of a company commander (usually the Wolfpack Battalion’s BC), a guide bearer, and the two platoons. Each platoon is led by a platoon leader who echoes the commands of the company commander. Furthermore, each platoon consists of four squads and five elements.
Platoon drill is around half the size of company drill and is known for the tight camaraderie between the cadets. It is led by the platoon commander and consists of four squads with six elements. Squad leaders of platoon drill are usually experienced and skilled, as they are responsible for a few commands during the sequence.
Squad drill only consists of nine cadets including the squad commander. The members are often the best marchers in the battalion. Squad drill is known for sharpness and accuracy. During competition, you can rarely catch mistakes in the sequence or among the cadets.
Unarmed drill is rhythmic to watch during the competitions, but it’s important to note that unarmed involves a huge amount of commitment and practice. Our battalion’s unarmed team is well-known in the All-City and often placed high. When observing the complex sequence of this special team, we must be very silent and respectful of the intense focus of the drillers.
Armed drill is a powerful special team that involves spinning rifles that are much heavier than they look. Members often make the routine look easy, but in reality, the synchronized sequence comes from many months of grueling work. This special team is also popular for the bonding that happens between team members.
