In JROTC, ranks are titles given to cadets. We have ranks in JROTC because it is sponsored by the US Military and in the military there are traditionally ranks to show a “system of leadership that indicates a Soldier’s level of expertise, responsibility, and authority inside that profession.” Following in its footsteps, JROTC uses ranks for the same reason. There are two kinds of ranks: ranks for Cadet Officers and ranks for Cadet Enlisted / Non-Commissioned Officers. Cadet Officer ranks are given to cadets who earn an officer position in the battalion such as the coordinating staff, big five, company staff (as company staff can hold officer ranks if they are already a master sergeant), etc. Cadet enlisted personnel ranks are earned by cadets who have not held an officer position prior. NCOPB & OPB are examples of the traditional methods emplaced by our program to be promoted.

In JROTC, there is a system emplaced called the Chain of Command. The Chain of Command is a hierarchical system which provides effective communication between cadets, company, coordinating and battalion staff. To ensure communication remains effective, the chain of command should not be broken. For example, if a cadet is curious about NCOPB, they should not ask the Battalion Commander, but rather their company staff.
