Video:Vice Chancellor Chris Husbands provides an overview of Sheffield Hallam University's Transforming Lives strategy
(Chris Husbands, 2017)
The Venture Matrix scheme is part of a much wider organisation, Sheffield Hallam University, which engages with 30,000 students and has an overarching strategy (SHU(a), n.d.) aimed at shaping all parts of the University. It is really important to revisit this strategy, and it's implementation plan (SHU(b), n.d.) to refresh and realign your understanding.
The strategy highlights the University's mission and vision of "transforming lives by shaping students futures and creating knowledge that makes a difference and provides practical solutions to real world challenges". The University will be a "Beacon for what an engaged university can do for and with it's communities". This goal will be achieved by four key strategic levers; 'Shaping Futures', 'Creating Knowledge', 'Leading Locally, Engaging Globally' and 'Building a Great University' Chris Husbands (2017).
The University's Leadership Team [ULT] (SHU, 2020) is responsible for driving the vision and strategy forward. The ULT has recently been significantly reshaped, building on the core members of staff in the institution and being supplemented by new additions from across various sectors.
The Venture Matrix scheme must embody this strategy and vision within it's operations and what it hopes to achieve. There is no scope for changing this strategy. The scheme has it's own informal vison, as we've seen on the Venture Matrix page of this toolkit, to develop students' employability skills and support their personal and professional development through the design and delivery of pedagogies for applied learning, across multiple disciplines. It's informal strategy is to form partnerships with academics, internal departments and external client organisations to form a network in which to apply these pedagogies within, as part of an innovative applied curriculum.
One element that the Venture Matrix vision lacks is the ability to measure success. There must be a clear vision on which to execute against. It's recommended that the vision be adapted to:
'The Venture Matrix scheme will be available to all Sheffield Hallam University students, no matter what course, discipline or faculty they originate from. Every Sheffield Hallam student will have the opportunity to develop their personal and professional skills through a Venture Matrix activity, which will be achieved through the digital design and delivery of pedagogies for applied learning throughout the curriculum.'
Built upon a decade of experience, there is a clear hierarchical leadership structure within the Venture Matrix Team, as highlighted in the People and Culture section, which offers a solid foundation to build on. Is it easy to change the team's structure, to better fit with Agile principles and working? In principle it is not, as there are processes and procedures in place as part of the wider organisation, which Venture Matrix has to adhere to. However, the structure doesn't necessarily require change. It must be acknowledged that this part of the process isn't about creating new strategic and leadership structures, but identifying existing ones in place, evaluating them and determining their scope and need for change.
It is recommended that the Venture Matrix team create a formal vision and strategy document, which mirrors and compliments the overall University strategy and implement documents, but which has more of a focus on the Venture Matrix. An template example is provided by Garner here (Gartner, 2020)
However, it takes the right people and culture to implement a vision and strategy. Click on the link below to find out more.
