Fulton MX-991/U
G. T. Price MX-991/U

The 90-degree angle flashlight first appeared in the 1920s, with the first model being a copper flashlight from the well-known brand Eveready. During World War II, the TL-122 military flashlight emerged (1937-44), initially made of copper and later plastic. This flashlight was produced in the US and Europe, including the UK, Italy, and France, for military use.

In 1963, the MX-99/U was introduced, produced by GT Price. The MX-991/U began production during the Vietnam War and was the last military flashlight of its kind. This model was subcontracted to several manufacturers, including GT Price, Bright Star, and Fulton, with Fulton still producing it today.

The main materials for the flashlight are PP and ABS, making it fire-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and impact-resistant. It comes in a military green color. The G.T. Price version has brass for all metal parts, such as the switch and tail cap, to prevent rust. The Fulton version contains a small amount of iron internally. The lens is made of plastic and is shatterproof. All joints have waterproof rubber seals. Besides the main switch, there is a momentary switch that allows you to press to turn on the light and release to turn it off, which is convenient for Morse code signaling. There are two plastic bumps near the switch to prevent accidental activation and leakage.

The flashlight uses two 2D batteries, and while it is not very bright, it suffices in complete darkness. The tail end has a compartment to store a few plastic filters, typically including diffused, blue, and red, as well as a spare bulb. The design is entirely focused on battlefield considerations.

Today, the US military still has contracts with Fulton, which continues to produce this flashlight for both civilian and industrial markets, resulting in various modifications, including different colors. If you’re looking to buy it for everyday use, be aware that it may not provide much light due to its plastic body, and upgrading to a higher wattage bulb is not recommended. However, it’s very enjoyable to use, especially for hiking and camping, and I’m quite confident in its durability, as it is a product that used in the battlefield.

You can easily find new Fulton models on eBay, marked "Made in USA." However, be cautious of counterfeit brands, including smaller versions that use C or AA batteries, as many are made in China and are of poor quality. Remember to use rechargeable batteries like Eneloop; otherwise, alkaline or carbon batteries might leak.
