ASP Taclite / Triad

In the 1990s, Don Keller designed a 2 x CR123A flashlight for ASP. In terms of brightness and specifications, it is similar to the Surefire 6P. Among 2 x CR123A flashlights, it is considered a classic.

Structurally, this flashlight only requires bulb replacement; there’s no need to replace the entire reflector assembly. The tail cap switch is not the type found in Surefire but rather a modern-style mechanical push button similar to those used in LED flashlights, which is very light to press and silent, though it is more likely to cause failure. The body is wrapped in soft foam, making it comfortable to hold. The reflector is glossy smooth, so the beam is not as soft as that of Surefire.

Due to the bulb replacement feature, it offers more versatility. I personally replaced it with a 6V bulb (true 6V, not the 4.8V from 2 x CR123A) and used two Lifepo4 16340 batteries. It works quite well for everyday use, with low operating and bulb replacement costs. However, for combat or apocalyptic scenarios, Surefire would be more stable and robust, as this flashlight has three relatively weak points: the bi-pin bulb, lack of spring on the positive terminal, and the switch system.
