The BicycleDutch youtube channel was very informative and interesting, and the examples given in the videos make understanding the bicycle infrastructure simple. I chose to view and comment on the video How the Dutch got their cycle paths, because I wondered myself how the most bicycle friendly nation in the world got to be that way. Before watching the video I was previously unaware of the large scale fluctuation in infrastructure and street design that occurred throughout the 20th century. From the widening of streets to make room for the heavy increase in motorized traffic to then reducing the width to the original size to make room for cycle paths and pedestrian zones. The reason for some of this being the oil crisis that caused gasoline prices to skyrocket, and therefor the cost to own a car. What I found the most interesting and inspiring of this situation was the speech by the Dutch prime minister at the time, who ensured that the quality of life would not decrease due to the economic downturn, as long as the Dutch people could commit to using less energy and alternative modes of transport. The Dutch government installed quality bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and the people responded positively. These cycle paths built in the late 20th century continue to be popular today, with safety and efficiency only improving.
