Den Haag

After a breif pass through The Hauge (otherwise known as Den Haag) on our way to Scheveningen Strand on the second day of the trip, Monday August 12th was dedicated to touring the city. The Hauge is not the capital city of the Netherlands, however it is the seat of government and many international affairs occur here, including the international court of justice. Ath the end of the tour the class visited an autonomous shuttle that is currently being used and tested to determine if this technology could improve the mobility network throughout the country. The main focus of this shuttle is the elderly and disabled as it shuttles up to eight people between the HagaZeikenhuis Hospital and OV-halte Leyenburg. The vehicle has 1 or 2 operators on board that can manualy operate the vehicle using a video game controller, however for the majority of the time the vehicle is in use it is in autonomous mode and will stop if a pedestrian or other obstacle enters its path. The stopping distance threshold of an obstacle is 3m, and the vehilce will stop almost instantly and an audible signal will be sent inside an out of the vehicle.
