Kinderdijk

On Saturday, August 3rd, our class set out for our largest group ride of the trip. We rode from the Delft city center, through the Netherlands second largest city: Rotterdam, all the way to the windmills at Kinderdijk. The 22 windmills from the Dutch golden age still stand in an open grassy area in central Holland, which is now listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. It was amazing to see working windmills in person to be able to envision the lifestyle the people who worked with these windmills had. Also I realized how the windmill was such a benificial and groundbreaking invention at the time, that allowed the dutch people to easy remove water from areas as well as make flour. First the class sat on one of the docks for lunch and rest after the long ride. We then began to explore the site on foot. There was both a cycle lane and pedestrian walkway to allow for multi modal access and exploration of the site. These facilities were being heavily used and seemed quite safe an effective due to the approximatley 2m of grass separation.
