Mrs. Veale’s List of Suggested Activities
May 5th to 8th
Hi girls.
I hope you and your families are still keeping well. How are you finding the work that I’m setting? Let me know if you've any problem with it. Even if you don't have a problem, I’d just love you to send me an email as I miss you all lots and I'm only dying for a chat! aveale@ursulineps.ie You don’t even need to have your own email address – your mum’s or dad’s will be perfect.
As with every other week, it would be great if you could spend 15 minutes a day on some maths & tables, and the same again on your reading & spellings.
Stay safe girls

Reading
For those that come to me for reading
How are you finding www.readtheory.org? I know it’s not the most colourful but it’s a very good programme. Don’t forget to read each quiz out loud, 5 times, with someone, so that you’re working on both your fluency as well as your comprehension. Read the questions out loud also, several times, so that you understand what you’re being asked.
If you have any difficulty working online, it's really important that you would read something - anything - every day! Pick any book you have at home, even if you've already read it 50 times, and read it again. Just make sure you're reading it out loud, to someone. Pick a page or a few paragraphs and read it 5 times to improve your fluency. Get someone to ask you a few questions about what you've read, to make sure you understand the story.
For those of you who haven’t yet connected me to your account, just follow these steps:
- Log in to www.readtheory.org as usual
- Go to the "My Teachers" page by clicking the 5th icon on the top left hand corner of the screen (looks like 3 people together)
- Enter my email address (aveale@ursulineps.ie) in the space provided.
- Click the "Send Invitation" button.
This will allow me to score your written answers and give you bonus points!
Has anyone found a story they’d like to share? Send your suggestions to me for next week to aveale@ursulineps.ie
The story I’m recommending this week is ‘Lotus and Feather’ https://www.storylineonline.net/books/lotus-and-feather/ a lovely story about a young girl who makes friends with an injured bird. It’s a bit sad in the middle, but don’t worry, there’s a happy ending
Spellings
For those that come to me for spellings
This week, I want us to focus specifically on 'er' words. Learn 4 spellings each night, Tuesday to Thursday. Use your dictionary to look up any word you don't understand. Put each one in a sentence, either by writing it into a copy or saying it out loud to someone. Don't forget, you need to have at least 7 words in every sentence. Try to make your sentences interesting by adding descriptive words.
farmER
Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
herb servant silver
expert certain better
stern person sister
serve shepherd letter
This game is called ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ and it allows you practise the spellings listed above
https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/lcwc/index.html
Just click ‘Year 1’, then click ‘Patterns’ and select ‘er’. Ask someone to give you a spelling test on Friday.
Dictation Time
Want to try some dictation sentences?
· The expert told the servant not to serve any herbs.
· The farmer was stern in his letter to the shepherd.
· Do not put any herbs in the silver dish.
· I am a much better person than my stern sister.
Maths
For those that come to me for Maths
We’re going to do more work on division this week as practice makes perfect! Look at these few slides if you need to remind yourself how we talk ourselves through doing short division sums.
Click on the link below to try these sums in your copy. Don’t scroll down too far or you’ll see the answers! (Quotient is just another word for the answer you get when you divide one number by another.)
https://www.math-drills.com/division/division_long_1dd2dq_nr_001.pdf?v=1360945853
Now, try these from your Planet Maths book - page 105, B, numbers 1-6.
Also, don’t forget to spend some time on your multiplication tables. Let's focus on 7 times tables again this week as they can be quite difficult. If you feel you’re ready to move on, then focus on x8. Ask someone at home to give you a small test on Friday:
A fun game to help you revise all of your tables is Diaper Derby – race your baby in a walker and try to reach the finish line first by answering multiplication tables https://www.multiplication.com/games/play/diaper-derby-multi-player-multiplication
You might also like to try Maths Monster. Just click on the number of the multiplication tables you want to practise e.g. 7 or 8, and see how many monsters you can collect.

Fine and Gross Motor Skills
These activities would benefit us all as they will improve the flexibility of the small muscles in our hands and fingers.
If you're looking for some movement breaks - https://app.gonoodle.com/ is a great website with lots of dances and exercises to try out.
