May 11th to 15th
Hi girls.
How are you all doing? It’s a bit hard to stay motivated when you know you’re not going to be back in school again until September. But, we all have to do our best and keep going for another while. Just try to do a bit every day so that we can get as ready as possible for the move into 5th Class.
Last week I had some lovely chats with a few of you and I’d love to be able to chat to you all. PLEEEEASE send a quick email to me at aveale@ursulineps.ie :)
Stay safe girls

This free website has been recommended for all parents by our NEPS psychologist (National Council for Special Education). https://www.mywellread.com/ is a lovely website which supports emotional wellbeing and resilience in children, aged between 8 and 12. Read some of these stories with your daughter/children and use the questions asked throughout as prompts for conversation and discussion.
If you’re enjoying www.readtheory.org please keep going with it. It’s a fantastic site and really effective for improving your reading, comprehension and fluency, once you make sure to read aloud, 5 times, with someone.
For those of you who haven’t yet connected me to your account, just follow these steps:
Log in to www.readtheory.org as usual
Go to the "My Teachers" page by clicking the 5th icon on the top left hand corner of the screen (looks like 3 people together)
Enter my email address (aveale@ursulineps.ie) in the space provided
Click the "Send Invitation" button.
This will allow me to score your written answers and give you bonus points!
If you’d prefer to read an actual book, try ‘Stinky Street.’ Note, this eBook won’t work on mobile phones so you'll have to use a computer, laptop or tablet. I’m deliberately picking a short book so that you can focus on a few pages every day and finish the book in a week
Click My class login
Class name - 4th Class 2020 (Make sure you use a capital letter for Class)
Class password - Mrs. Veale (Capital letter for Mrs. and Veale, have a space between them and don’t forget the full stop after Mrs.)
Click My Bookshelf
Type Stinky Street in the Search box and click Go
Then click on the book to start reading.
Again, it’s really important to read out loud, with someone. Use the blue buttons on the bottom right of the screen to turn the pages. You don’t have to read every page 5 times but maybe pick a page or two that you found a little difficult and read those several times. Ask your mum/dad to ask you a few questions about your book to make sure you’re understanding what you’re reading.
This week, I want us to focus specifically on 'or' words. Learn 4 spellings each night, Monday to Thursday. Use your dictionary to look up any word you don't understand. Put each one in a sentence, either by writing it into a copy or saying it out loud to someone. Don't forget, you need to have at least 7 words in every sentence. Try to make your sentences interesting by adding descriptive words.
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
porch cork born north
torch fork corn horse
storm stork port corner
snort short sport morning
This game is called ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ and it allows you practise some of the spellings listed above https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/lcwc/index.html
Just click ‘Year 1’, then click ‘Patterns’ and select ‘or’. Ask someone to give you a spelling test on Friday.
Want to try some dictation sentences? Ask someone to call these sentences out to you.
The short fork was left in the corner of the porch.
The storm is bad so the ship is in the port up north.
I was born in Cork and love playing sport.
The horse will snort if he steps on a thorn.
Capacity is our topic for this week. This is all about measuring how much liquid is held in a container. The units of measurements most commonly used are litres and millilitres, often seen as l or ml on the sides of containers. Take a look around your house and see if you can find two different litre containers, two different 500ml containers and one 250ml container. Look at containers for milk, orange juice, water, measuring jugs, shampoo, washing up liquid, cooking oil, etc. What else can you find?
Use this game to practise reading amounts of rocket fuel in litres and millilitres - https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/capacity/index.html
Each day, click on a different answer bar e.g. answers in steps of 100ml on Monday, answers in steps of 50ml on Tuesday etc. You'll have to read the scale very carefully to get the right answer. See how many rockets you can launch.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/coconut-ordering will help you order the amounts from smallest to largest.
On the first screen, click Capacity in the top right corner.
Then select Up to 1000ml
Click on the coconuts to order them.
The next time you open this game, select Up to 1l (2dp) or Up to 10l (1dp). This will get you ordering amounts of liquid with one or 2 decimal places.
Remember: 1,000ml=1l, 500ml=0.5l, 250ml=0.25l, 100ml=0.1l.
Finally, this game is all about swapping from litres to millilitres and from millilitres to litres https://www.studyladder.com/games/activity/converting-between-liters-and-milliliters-28470 You'll notice the spelling is a little different - that's because this is an American game and spellings are sometimes different in the States. Just click 'Join Now' to get a free trial account.
Remember: 1l=1,000ml, 0.5l=500ml, 0.25l=250ml, 0.1l=100ml
Also, don’t forget to spend some time on your multiplication tables. Let's focus on 8 times tables this week. If you feel you’re ready to move on, then focus on x9. Ask someone at home to give you a small test on Friday.
Parents/Guardians, if you want some tips to help your child learn their tables, you might find something useful here - https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/blog/times-tables-tips/
Did you enjoy Diaper Derby last week? I think it's my favourite tables game so far! https://www.multiplication.com/games/play/diaper-derby-multi-player-multiplication
You might also like to try Maths Monster. Just click on the number of the multiplication tables you want to practise e.g. 8, and see how many monsters you can collect.
