The Julian Hoff Era Photos (1981-2004)

In 1981, Dr. Julian (“Buz”) Hoff became the fourth Chairman of Neurosurgery. Dr. Hoff helped lead the U-M Department of Neurosurgery into the modern era. Under Dr. Hoff's leadership, the neurosurgical service and training program become more diverse and comprehensive. During his time as chairman, he expanded the scope of the laboratory and hired a number of full time PhD basic science research faculty. He remained as chairman for 24 years and provided inspiration to both his faculty and residents. Under his direction, the department grew and flourished.

In 1982, the Neurosurgery Laboratories that began under the leadership of Drs. Peet, Kahn, Schneider, and Crosby were named for Dr. Elizabeth Crosby.

In July 2001, Neurosurgery is given full departmental status at the University of Michigan, elevating it from a Section of Surgery to the Department of Neurosurgery and allowing the department to take a more active role in the higher-level decision-making processes of the Health System as a whole.
