Dr. Nakaji, supported by students from the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, began an initiative to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 with the objective of saving lives and keeping healthcare professionals safe. The initiative began on March 27, 2020 creating teams dedicated to specified categories of PPE innovation. Efforts include developing and improving of device designs, updating and refining protocol, and launching public outreach efforts. Each of these initiatives have been supported by resources donated from universities, local companies, and generous individuals.
Time Commitment: Variable, dependent on team. Please look here for descriptions of different available projects.
Students who support this initiative help with fundraising activities for other PPE manufacturing arms of the CSSC, including the medical materials donation drives, Hero Meals, and Street Medicine Phoenix Hygiene Kits.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours/week
Available to all students
Students volunteer to solicit local organizations for material donations to support the COVID Innovation Team, PPE manufacturing, the Mask-Quaraders, and other CSSC programs.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours/week
Available to all students
Formed by first year medical students, volunteers for this initiative are manufacturing semi-reusable cloth masks in their homes. This initiative is supported entirely on donated materials from community partners and private citizens who have loaned their sewing machines if they are no longer able to use them. Manufactured masks are then distributed to local healthcare providers in need.
Time Commitment: 1-10 hours/week dependent on volunteer interest and capabilities in sewing masks
Interested students apply for and are accepted by the Maricopa County Health Department (MCDPH) volunteers. Volunteers supporting this initiative work in the Maricopa County centralized warehouse to move critical PPE and supplies to healthcare facilities within the county.
Time Commitment: Students must sign up for at least one 4-8 hour shift, with number of shifts chosen by volunteer
Interested students apply for and are accepted by the Maricopa County Health Department (MCDPH) volunteers. Volunteers supporting this initiative work for Maricopa County training local medical providers how to properly don and doff PPE for Covid-19. Volunteers will receive necessary training, those receiving the don/doff training will be screened prior to training with temp checks, and be required to wear a mask during training. Volunteers need to assess their own level of risk if electing to participate in this program.
This program was completed on 4/27/2020. Students who volunteered with this program contributed to the production of 30,000 disposable face masks, and over 1 million face mask filters. What an outstanding effort, thank you to all of your hard work!
