Program Descriptions:
Prevention of Social Isolation
The goal of this program is connecting students with seniors living in hospice or nursing and assisted living facilities. During the current pandemic our seniors, already an isolated community, are more in need of companionship than ever. Loneliness is associated with poor mental and physical health and virtual visits with students can help meet the need for connection. Video conferencing and activities such as writing letters and cards will be used to safely bring students and seniors together during this COVID-19 pandemic.
There are two opportunities available to volunteers through this project. The first is through virtual volunteering with Sage Hospice. The second is through a virtual pen-pals program with Dreamcatchers.org.
Time Commitment:
Sage Hospice: 1-4 hours/week
Dreamcatchers: 1 hour/week
Wesley Clinic
Students will be able to volunteer their time to help patients at Wesley Clinic, a FQHC, transition towards online, web-based care. Projects include helping patients get web-enabled for telemedicine visits and the Wesley portal, performing depression screening over the phone, educating patients about colon cancer cancer screening, and general outreach for social determinants of health.
Time Commitment:
Mandatory 1-hour training session
Minimum of one 4-hour shift/week
*Medical students only
Banner Family Medicine Vulnerable Patient Outreach
We have a new remote volunteer opportunity for MS4s to help the Banner FM residency program reach out to and provide resources to vulnerable patients who may be experiencing any negative impacts due to the pandemic and/or social distancing. Volunteers will receive training and have support from attendings during call times.
Time Commitment: 1 hour/call, 2-3 calls/week
*UA COM-P fourth-year medical students only
