A Mermei is an Ugari word, meaning a merchant/trading guild run along familial lines, these Mermei form the basic social and familial unit of Ugari society, and the most powerful sometimes control entire Ugari cities outright. The Ullyun were the first mercantile group of any real significance to invest in Fyrefall, in fact their then newly minted Family head Amorgan was called insane by his peers for moving his entire Mermei to the nascent pioneer town. The Ullyun brought with them things Fyrefall was sorely lacking at the time, not only merchant connections they could leverage to bring trading ships to the port, the keen business mind of their patriarch, with a knack for making the rough- and tumble town profitable. he funded prospectors to appraise the Cinderlands' natural resources, spread rumors of lost riches from before the sundering and powerful monsters to draw in adventurers (who have need for food, lodging, weapons, armor potions, and innumerable other things Fyrefall was able to make good money providing) but by far Amorgan's most brilliant scheme was Cinderwood.
Cinderwood is a kind of Hardwood native to the Cinderlands that has distinct veins of bright orange running through it. By dipping into the Mermei's reserves(and nearly bankrupting himself in the process) Amorgan hired world- class woodworkers to make beautiful pieces of furniture and gifted them to nobility and royalty across the world. His gamble paid off, the craftsmanship of the pieces combined with the perceived prestige of seeing them in use by such important people turned Cinderwood into a potent status symbol and luxury product overnight, a distinction it retains to this day as perhaps Fyrefall's most important export. The Ullyun's most profitable venture is, naturally, the Export of Cinderwood (both as a raw material and in finished products) to other continents, over which they have a near monopoly. Amorgan and his people carefully control the amount they export to maintain a high price, as well as a perception of scarcity and exclusivity in the eyes of their wealthy and powerful customers. In the past two decades, Ullyun's dominance has been challenged by the arrival of the Separi, another Mermei that fall on the other side of the religious divide that splits the Ugari- becoming their main rivals practically over night. In recent years, the Separi have made inroads challenging Ullyun control of Fyrefall's docks- employing gangs of hired toughs and longshoremen looking for extra coin to harass and intimidate Ullyun unloading operations and warehouses(the Ullyun of course, respond in kinds with hired thugs of their own). The matter is close to a boiling point, and unless something changes soon the docks may become the battleground for a violent gang war.
