Presentation Title 1 of 2: Maximizing the Potential of ICT in Language Education
Abstract 1: For those of us who remember studying second languages with blackboards, chalk, and tape recorders, the flood of tablet computers, smart screens, and network connections into the classroom can represent a significant challenge to our established teaching methods. However, the increased investment in technology in the Japanese education system in recent years does not necessarily mean that the English curriculum has been suddenly modernized. ICT tools present seemingly infinite possibilities for second language education, but it is up to teachers to work together to develop methods and materials that leverage the capabilities that these tools afford us (without throwing our old ideas and methods out the window!) This workshop aims to demonstrate how through creativity and cooperation, teachers can make the most of the technological tools at their disposal in ways that develop the communicative skills of their students.
Presentation Title 2 of 2: Updating Classic Activities for Today's Technology
Abstract 2: In this short workshop participants will work together to update a classic speaking-listening activity, that can also be used as an exam. Each participant will leave the workshop with at least one activity that has been adapted and is ready to go for their own teaching situation, whether primary, middle, or high school, or even university.
Presenter Bios:
Kieran Enright is a Coordinator for International Relations at the Tottori Prefectural Offices. He has 12 years of teaching experience in Japan, working as both an ALT and a private English instructor. He has an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Massey University (New Zealand), and his research interests include teaching with technology, materials development, and teaching methods. In his M.A. research, he investigated the ways in which ALTs made use of ICT tools in Japanese classrooms.
Bettina Begole is a professor at Tottori University of Environmental Studies. She holds an MA in TESOL. Her field of study is literacy.
