Language Teaching Workshop Title: Spinning a Story ~Weaving Grammar and Lexis~
演題:「物語を紡ぐように ～文法，語彙の構築～」

Presentation Abstract: Using a picture book suitable for secondary-school students (Scieszka and Smith’s The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!), this workshop will illustrate how grammar and lexis are closely intertwined and not distinct from one another. It will be demonstrated how story imparts agency to the students – to confidently use and enjoy idiomatic language in ELT. While the power of story enhances student engagement, teachers gain in confidence in supporting the students in their discovery process.

概要: シェスカ作「３びきのコブタのほんとうの話」のような絵本を適切に中高生の英語学習に取り入れることで得られる効果について、今回のワークショップではお話したいと思います。文法と語彙との密接な関係の例に触れながら、物語性のある作品と関わることで、学習者は慣用表現を学ぶことができます。加えて、物語の持つ力によって学習者の想像力をかきたて、学習の中によりいっそう引き込むことでまた、指導者も自信を持って学習を支援することが出来るのです。

Presenter's Bio Data: Janice Bland is a professor of English Education at Nord University in Norway. Her core interests are concerned with creativity in ELT with primary and secondary-school children.

Pronunciation Learning ~In Terms of Discrete Sounds and Typical Rhythm~
演題:「英語入門期における音声学習～音とリズムの観点から～」

Presentation Abstract: I will introduce tools and activities I use to aide novice students in their pursuit of clear pronunciation. More specifically, I will address sounds that either do not exist or are different from those that are used in Japanese through the exhibition of activities I use in my current classes. I would like to share the ideas of the manner of articulation, phonics, and common reductions with participants.
概要: 今回のワークショップでは、初級学習者向けの発音学習ツールやアクティビティを紹介します。特に日本語にない音や日本語とは異なる音に焦点を当て、実際にどのようなアクティビティを学校で行っているかお話します。それぞれの調音方法だけでなく、音とつづりの関係（フォニックス）及び音の脱落（リダクション）について、参加者の皆さんと一緒にアイディアの共有ができればと思っています。

Presenter's Bio Data: Naoya Ishida is currently a teacher at Seishokaichi Junior and Senior High School. In Australia, he received a Diploma of TESOL and interned at ILSC Language School. After returning to Japan, he oversaw the pronunciation section of the dictionary “BASIC GENIUS English – Japanese Dictionary Second Edition (2017)” published by Taishukan Shoten.

概要: 今回のワークショップでは、講演者の修士論文である「日本の高等学校における学習者の自律と意欲向上を目指した協同学習」に基づいて、実際の教育現場において講演者が実践している方法を紹介したいと思います。まずは、新学習指導要領が掲げる目標、いわゆる日本における最近の英語教育の方向性と実際の現場での指導について参加者全員で考えてみたいと思います。そして講演者が実践している具体的な内容、Can-Do Statementの作成や活用、パフォーマンステスト、プレゼンテーション、スピーチ、ディベート、多読、4技能を高める工夫といった授業デザインや評価方法を含めた、授業内外での活動を共有し、参加 者の皆さんとともによりよい英語教育について考えていきたいと思います。

Presenter's Bio Data: Takako Yamane is a senior high school English teacher from Himeji with 30 years of experience. She also taught Japanese at high schools in Australia for 2 years. She finished her Master’s Degree at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies in 2015 and is currently doing her PhD there. Her research interests include autonomy, motivation, methodology, education policy and classroom practices.
発表者の紹介: 姫路にて約３０年間、高等学校の英語教師の経験を持つ。オーストラリアで2年間、日本語を教えたこともあり、現在、神戸市外国語大学の博士課程に在籍。研究分野は、教授法、自律、学習動機、協働学習、教育学など多岐にわたる。

Tottori JALT Event Report:
まず、初級学習者にとっての発音習得の必要性について石田氏の見解をお話しされた後、実際に石田氏が教育現場で実践されている調音指導やフォニックス指導の説明がありました。授業に取り入れられているKahootやGoogle Classroom、Quizletなどといったアプリケーションの紹介もありました。ワークショップ全体を通して、講師と参加者の双方向のやりとりが多くなされ、参加者は実際に発音練習をしたりゲームをしたりしながら理解を深めていました。
In the first part of the presentation, Mr. Ishida explained the importance of teaching learners clear English pronunciation in the beginner classroom. After that, he introduced some tools and activities that he uses in his classes to teach learners articulation and phonics. He also introduced some applications that he uses, such as Kahoot, Google Classroom, and Quizlet. This workshop included a lot of interaction between the speaker and participants. Thus, the participants were able to not only understand the content but also get hands-on experience with the materials. Furthermore, they could find new ways to check their (and their students’) English pronunciation while enjoying various activities with the other participants.
NOTE: This event was conducted in Japanese. 今回のイベントは日本語で開催されました。

Presentation Abstract: This workshop will introduce ways to improve teachers’ classroom practice through providing examples of the presenter’s everyday practice. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss the current English education policies in Japan and, through the discussion, we will try to find a better solution to bridge the gaps between the education policy and classroom practices. (The workshop is based on the presenter’s Master’s thesis, “Developing Learner Autonomy and Motivation through Cooperative Learning at Senior High Schools in Japan.”).

"Strategies to Improve Learning"

Presentation Abstract: Effective learning strategies exist. These strategies, although well known in the field of cognitive psychology, are hardly mentioned in teaching training materials. Because some of the strategies are counter-intuitive, they are not easily discovered by chance or experience. This presentation will cover the strategies and provide ample opportunities for participants to both experience studying using the strategies as well as to explore ways that the strategies could be used to meet their own personal and professional needs.

Presenter's Bio Data: Jason is currently a lecturer at Fukuyama University; however, he has also taught extensively in the Japanese public school system. His research interests include the study of effective learning strategies, and methods for improving student attention and engagement. He is also the current president of the Okayama chapter of JALT.
概要: 効果的な学習方略、というのは実際に存在します。 これらの学習方略は、認知心理学の分野ではよく知られていますが、教授法についての教材の中ではほとんど言及されることがありません。 また、それらの中には直感に反するものもあるため、偶然や経験によって容易に発見されることもないのです。 今回のプレゼンテーションではいくつかの学習方略を取り上げ、参加者がそれらの学習方略を使って学習を体験すると同時に、それぞれのニーズを満たす方向性を探る機会を提供します。

Cross-Curricular Approach to English Activities

Presentation Abstract: As teachers we know language uptake is more likely to occur if learners are given more opportunities for varied forms of input. However, the reality is that exposure often happens only within the English class for a very limited amount of time. So how can we maximize engagement? In this workshop, we will take materials from other subject areas and work on ways to expand the content into English classes, in addition to peppering English with a few doses of other subjects. Specifically, we will focus on building English activities and attempt to integrate learning across the curriculum.

Ann Mayeda is an associate professor at Konan Women’s University in Kobe. She conducts teacher-training courses and workshops for pre- and in-service teachers of English. The continuing theme in her teaching/learning journey centers on learner development and issues in autonomy as it applies to young learners and young adult learners.
甲南女子大学英語文化学科アン・マエダ准教授は、英語教員養成教育や現職英語教員向けの研修やワークショップを担当しています。これまでの主な研究テーマは学習者の学習能力を高める方法で、さらに、小学校、中学校、高等学校、及び大学の学習者の自律的学習についても研究してきました。

概要: 英語学習者の言語習得力を高めるためには、様々な学び方を体験させ、より多くの機会を与えることが望ましいというのは、教える側にとっては共通の見解だと思います。しかし、現在の英語学習・英語活動は限られた授業時間内だけで完結しているため、今後はいかに学習者が英語を学んだり、英語に触れたりする機会を増やしていくかが課題となります。このワークショップでは、英語の授業に他教科の教材を活用し、他の科目の学び方を応用して取り入れることで、英語学習に良い影響を与える方法について考えたいと思います。特に、英語活動の構築に軸をおきながら、全科目を通しての横断的な学び方と機会を浸透させることを目指していきます。

Language Teaching Workshop:
Active, Content-based Learning: Natural Resource Management
演題：「アクティブ・ラーニング」と「内容を重視した言語学習」を同時に実践
－漁業資源管理シミュレーションを通して－
Presentation Abstract:
MEXT often talks about active learning, but busy teachers have little time to think about it. Another option is content-based learning, using English to learn something else, actively. Today’s workshop will demonstrate one example of both active learning and content-based learning in one communicative activity, called FishBanks. Workshop participants will take the role of students, and after the debriefing, there will be a short brainstorming session to think of ways to adapt ideas for our own classrooms, or create new activities.
概要:
文部科学省が掲げる「アクティブ・ラーニング」ですが、実際の教育現場で教員が積極的に取り組むための下地が十分に出来ているかというと難しい問題です。そして、同じく近年よく取りあげられるものとして、「内容を重視した言語学習（CBL）」があります。具体的には、英語を使って英語を能動的に学ぶ、教授法を指しますが、本日のワークショップでは、FishBanksという対話型の漁業資源管理シミュレーションを使って、アクティブ・ラーニングとCBL双方を一度に実践する事例を紹介します。ワークショップの参加者には、学習者の立場として共同作業をしてもらいます。ワークショップ後半では、前半の共同作業で出たアイデアを実際の授業に取り入れる方法やアクティビティについて一緒に考えたいと思います。

Presenter's Bio Data:
Tetsuji Arata teaches Environmental Ethics at Tottori University of Environmental Studies. He had been working for an environmental NGO from 1993. At that time, he hosted a series of seminars held in Honolulu titled Japan-US Seminar on Sustainable Living and used FishBanks as a communication tool.
Bettina Begole has been teaching English in Japan for 29 years, and teaches at TUES. Her field is literacy, but she has also led many teacher workshops on motivating students. Other recent activities include workshops for teaching license renewal on active learning, and growth mindset.

荒田鉄二氏 略歴：現公立鳥取環境大学教授。担当科目は「環境と倫理」など。ホノルルで開催された日米環境NGO関係者のためのセミナー事務局を務めた経験を持ち、その際、参加者間のコミュニケーションを促進するツールとして、FishBanksを実際に使用したことがある。
べゴール・ベッティーナ氏 略歴：現公立鳥取環境大学准教授。２９年にわたり、英語教育に携わり、専門分野は読み書き能力（リテラシー）。学習者への動機付けに関する教員向けのワークショップを主導してきた他、近年は教員免許更新講習の一環として、アクティブ・ラーニングや、成長的マインドセット（growth mindset）に関するワークショップを毎年行っている。
