Creative Use of Visual Images for the L2 Classroom
演題:「視覚の効果的な利用 ~第二言語としての英語を学ぶ中で~」
Presentation Abstract:
This workshop describes the theoretical principles underlying visual pedagogy, and shows how those ideas can be applied to the production of creative and inclusive classroom activities that reflect the diverse needs of students. The speaker introduces a set of strategies for reducing the teacher's reliance on course book visuals that enables them to use cartoons, drawings, and photography resources in inspiring ways. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to engage in the practical creation of visuals.

今回のワークショップでは、視覚を使った教授法を理論的に説明します。そしてそれを、実際の学習現場で応用することで、それぞれの目的を持った学習者に対して、創造的かつ積極的な授業を展開することができるのです。教える側が、教科書のみに依存した授業を行うのではなく、漫画や絵や写真などの視覚を刺激するようなさまざまなリソースを用いる方法をご紹介します。そして、参加者の皆さんにも授業での視覚の利用について、実際に考えてもらいたいと思います。

Presenter's Bio Data:
Dat Bao is a senior lecturer in Monash University, Australia. Previously he has worked with universities in the USA, UK, Thailand, and Singapore. His expertise includes curriculum design, intercultural communication, materials development, creative pedagogy and visual pedagogy in language education. He is the author of Understanding Silence and Reticence: Nonverbal Participation in Second Language Acquisition (Bloomsbury, 2014) & Creativity and Innovations in ELT Material Development: Looking beyond the Current Design (Multilingual Matters, 2018).
略歴 ダット・バオ博士:
オーストラリア、モナシュ大学教育学部の専任講師。アメリカ、イギリス、タイ、シンガポールの大学においても講師等経験を持つ。カリキュラム作成、異文化交流、教材開発、言語教育における創造的理論、視覚的理論などを専門分野として研究し、さまざまな著書を持つ。
Dr. Bao is a JALT "Four Corners Tour" speaker. He is a high-profile international speaker from the 2018 JALT international conference. He will be sent to present in the four corners of Japan, including Tottori. It is an honor to have him here with us. Please come join us.

I will demonstrate a variety of activities to teach English using only English. Inspiring students to convey meaning using English, to use their imagination, and to interact in English, these activities will also encourage them to take an active part in lessons and to enjoy the process of language learning.
概要1: 英語のみを使って効果的に英語を教えるためのさまざまなアクティビティについてデモンストレーションを行います。英語を使って意味を伝達すること、想像力を行使すること、学習者同士そして、教師と交流することを奨励するようなアクティビティを取り入れることで、学習者は積極的に学習に取り組み、また学習する過程そのものを楽しむことができるのです。
Workshop 2: Making Our Teaching More Effective よりよい教授法の考察 ~もっと効果的に教えるために~
Firstly, I will introduce strategies which can help teachers communicate effectively with students without using Japanese. Next, we will have small group discussions about classroom management and the importance of establishing a sense of community among students. Finally, we will consider whether reluctant and sleeping students are a reflection of our teaching style.
概要2: まず初めに、教える側が日本語を使わないで学習者と効果的に意思の疎通を図る方法についてお話します。次に、小グループでディスカッションをしていただきます。その内容は、クラスのマネジメントについて、そして学習者同士で仲間意識を確立させることがどのような効果を生むか、その重要性についてです。最後に、授業中に居眠りをするなど、やる気のない学習者の態度は、教え方に原因があるのかどうか、ということについて考えてみたいと思います。

Christopher Hollis's Bio Data:
Originally from the USA, Christopher Hollis has been teaching English in Japan for more than 9 years. Prior to teaching in Japan, he taught English to international students from around the world at the University of Illinois (USA). Chris holds an M.A. in TESL/TEFL from the University of Illinois. His research interests involve second language vocabulary acquisition, extensive reading, bilingualism and Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT). Other interests of his include improving foreign language education in Tottori and exploring Japanese language and culture. Currently employed as the “Director of Foreign Language Education” at the Hokuei Board of Education in Tottori Prefecture, Chris is also the current president of the Tottori JALT.
クリストファー・ハリス氏 略歴: アメリカ、イリノイ州出身。日本にて9年以上の英語の教育指導経験を持つ。アメリカ、イリノイ大学にてさまざまな国籍を持つ留学生に、第二語言語として英語を教えた経験も2年以上持つ。イリノイ大学にて、第二言語としての英語教授法であるTESL修士号を取得。第二言語習得法、語彙習得、多読、バイリンガリズム、タスク中心教授法(TBLT)を主とした英語教育法を研究し、鳥取県の英語教育の向上、そして日本文化と言語に対して強い関心を持つ。現在、北栄町教育委員会にて、外国語指導員兼主任(Director of Foreign Language Education)として教鞭をとり、また全国語学教育学会(JALT)鳥取支部の現支部長を務めている。
Shirley Leane's Bio Data:
Shirley Leane is Assistant Professor at Tottori University and she teaches at the university and Fuzoku junior high school. She has taught students from over 30 different countries and strongly believes that given the same learning environment, Japanese students are no different to students of other nationalities. Shirley is the immediate former president of the Tottori JALT.
シャーリー・リーン氏 略歴: 鳥取大学助教。現在、鳥取大学地域科学部付属中学校においても教鞭を取っている。30カ国以上での教育経験を持つ。その経験を通し、「同じ環境下において、日本人学生は他の国籍を持つ学生と何ら違いはない」という信念を持っている。全国語学教育学会(JALT)鳥取支部の前支部長。

Workshop 2 of 2 - Making Our Teaching More Effective
Firstly, Shirley asked us to define “a good teacher” by reflecting on our own observations and experiences. We all participated in a fun activity which illustrated the importance of eye contact in the classroom. She also talked about the importance of allowing and encouraging students to move during lessons, even the simple act of standing up to talk with their partner can help motivate students. Finally, we had a group discussion about classroom management and how to better hold our students’ attention. Using references from Zoltan Dornyei and Rod Ellis, she emphasized that it is the teachers’ responsibility to make sure students are motivated in the classroom.

Twenty-seven people attended this presentation in Kurayoshi City, Tottori prefecture. And, about twenty people the networking social event that followed it.
Responding to members’ requests, Christopher Hollis (current president) and Shirley Leane (former president) of Tottori JALT shared their ideas for effective teaching of English in English. They also gave us clues for how to encourage students to be more active in lessons. After the workshops, we all had a chance to exchange ideas at a networking potluck dinner.
Workshop 1 of 2 - Teaching English in English: Strategies for Success
Chris started with four key words, collaboration, negotiation, imagination, and communication, all of which are important for inspiring and empowering students to learn a foreign language. He showed us several activities. For example, in “Reverse Taboo”, through using cards on which a keyword and, below, related words are written, a pair of L2 learners can collaborate to negotiate meaning and use their imagination when attempting to communicate. The rules are that one in the pair makes sentences based on the various keyword related words and the other attempts to guess the keyword. Finally, Chris demonstrated an activity that helps students to use their imagination to guess the meaning of target phrases in context through using movie clips from popular kids’ movies, such as the Minions.

Presentation Abstract: Our task as educators is increasingly to help our learners become well-rounded global citizens. Our learners will be required to be autonomous, think critically, and understand the cultural perspectives of others. Incorporating these skills into our classes also increases the expectations placed on students and instructors alike. In this workshop, teachers can discuss the obstacles we face when supporting learners as they develop these skills, and effective approaches to overcoming such obstacles. Participants in this workshop will also discuss specific strategies that we can use every day to help students achieve the skills necessary for success within the global community.
概要: 近年、教育者にとっての大きな課題のひとつに、世界市民としてバランスの取れた人材の育成があります。一方で学習者には、自主性、批判的思考、そして多文化への理解が求められます。この三つの要素を英語学習の中に組み込むためには、学習者と教育者が共に、高い意識を持っている必要があります。
今回のワークショップでは、学習者のこれらのスキルを伸ばすにあたって直面する障壁、そしてそれを克服するために有効な方法について話し合ってもらいたいと思います。また、参加者の皆さんには、学習者がグローバルコミュニティの一員として成功するために必要なスキルを育てるという目標の中、実際に現場で行っているそれぞれの指導方法についても話し合ってみてもらいたいと思います。
Presenter's Bio: Richmond Stroupe is the current Chair of the International Language Education: TESOL Graduate Program at Soka University in Tokyo, Japan. He has worked with university and professional language-learners from Asia since 1989, and his academic interests include curriculum development, teacher training and professional development, and enhancing learners' critical thinking skills.
リッチモンド・ストゥループ氏 略歴: 国際的な言語教育の第一人者の一人で、現全国語学教育学会(JALT)会長を務めている。創価大学、国際言語教育、英語教育(TESOL)専修教授。1989年より、アジアでの言語教育に携わる。専門分野は、カリキュラム開発、教員養成、専門的能力の開発、学習者の批判的思考力の強化。

”I Am More Than A Stereotype": Stories of Hope and Change
ステレオタイプからの脱出:希望と変化についての物語
Presentation Abstract: This presentation is a journey to my activism and identity reconstruction as an Iranian English teacher/researcher in Japan by recounting my critical events-unexpected incidents that significantly influence an individual (Mertova & Webster, 2012)-and my personal narratives-stories which we tell ourselves and others about our personal lived experiences (Baker, 2006, 2014). I will discuss how these incidents and stories have changed my life and how I am trying different ways to be a change agent to dispel stereotypes about my identity. I will introduce my weblog, titled "I Am More Than A Stereotype" (beyondyourstereotypes. wordpress.com), where I write about my ouch moments in the hope of eliminating macro and microaggressions, defined as "the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership" (Sue, 2010, p. 3), and stereotypes by making the invisible visible. I will also explain and illustrate how I create classrooms of and for activism by integrating my weblog into my lessons and by introducing the real Iran and Iranian people behind the news to my students. I will further offer a display of items that tangibly represent stages of my journey and identity formation.

Bridging the Gap Between Ideal and Reality:Diversity Awareness in Action
「理想と現実の狭間を埋めるにために:多様性を意識した行動とは?」
Presentation Abstract: In my follow-up session, I will facilitate discussion about how educators can and should be responding to the voices of people like Parisa. Are we making as much effort as she is to be change agents and dispel stereotypes, or could some of us be a little too comfortable with an inequitable status quo? I have over a decade of experience serving as chair of human rights and sexual harassment committees at my university, and offering diversity training in FD and PD seminars for both high school teachers and university professors through our Open University and Teaching and Learning Support Center, especially for professors using EMI in classes with international students. But I am acutely aware that all too often, the programs and publications offered by our institutions are little more than superficial PR hype that fails to address the realities on our campuses. How can we move beyond talking the talk to walking the walk? As a bridge or springboard (diving board?) for discussion, I propose that we discuss the JALT Code of Conduct, a short one-page document that is easily accessible on the website, and explore the roles we are challenged to play in realizing the ideals we profess to uphold.

Parisa Mehran's Bio Data:
Parisa Mehran is a PhD candidate at Takemura Lab, Informedia Education Division, Cybermedia Center, Osaka University, Japan. Born and raised in Tehran, she holds a BA in English Language and Literature and an MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), both from Alzahra University, Tehran, Iran. Before moving to Japan, she taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and General English (GE) courses at Alzahra University. In 2014, she obtained the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship and is now pursuing further education in Japan. Her research interests include Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), online/blended course design, AR/VR applications in ELT, teaching English for peace and social change, and global issues in ELT. She currently teaches part-time at Konan Women's University, Kobe Women's University, and an English conversation school, Princeford English College. In addition, she is an English tutor at Paper Airplanes, which provides free, one-on-one language and skills instruction to people affected by conflict, and she teaches for the Hands Up project, which offers online English storytelling lessons to Palestinian and Syrian Children in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jordan. She also actively gives talks about the real Iran and the Iranian people behind the news, and blogs about the Iranian identity.
Gerry Yokota's Bio Data:
Gerry Yokota is Professor of English and Contemporary Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies at Osaka University. In her teaching and research, she takes a cognitive linguistic approach to academic writing, critical thinking, and the representation of gender and culture. In the area of professional service, she has over a decade of experience offering diversity training in FD and PD seminars for both high school teachers and university professors through Osaka University's Open University and Teaching and Learning Support Center, especially for professors using EMI in classes with international students. She has also served as chair of her faculty's human rights committee and the university-wide sexual harassment subcommittee, and as director of the university's harassment counseling office.

Twenty-five people attended this presentation at Tottori University.
Parisa Mehran and Gerry Yokota presented an interconnected team workshop on the topics of diversity and inclusion. First, using stunningly beautiful images of Iran, Parisa took us on the journey to her activism and identity reconstruction as an Iranian English teacher and researcher in Japan. She recounted various critical events she has experienced and discussed how they transformed her into the constructive change agent that she is today. Parisa introduced her weblog, titled “I Am More Than A Stereotype”, which she writes with the aim of eliminating stereotypes and macro and micro-aggressions (defined as: the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership). She opened minds and helped to dissolve many commonly held stereotypes by making the invisible visible. Parisa concluded her presentation by illustrating how she creates mind-opening classes for her students by integrating her weblog into her lessons and by introducing the real Iran and Iranian people.
Gerry Yokota discussed how educators can and should be responding to the voices of the victims of stereotypes. She asked the question “Are we making as much effort as Parisa is to be a change agent and dispel stereotypes, or could we be a little too comfortable with an inequitable status quo?” Gerry spoke from her perspective as both the chair of the human rights committee at Osaka University and a teacher trainer, conducting diversity-training workshops for both professors and high school teachers. She reintroduced us to the JALT Code of Conduct and helped us to explore the roles we all must play in realizing the ideals we profess to uphold. Gerry concluded with some practical steps we can all take to ensure that we also do not simply become a diversity statistic.
Parisa opened our minds to the possible dramatic consequences of unintentional actions and Gerry made us take a hard look at ourselves and own actions. Parisa discussed how to fight against negative stereotypes and behavior towards others and discussed how educators can encourage inclusion and awareness of diversity within their classrooms and educational institutions. Together they worked as a team to educate and rally more change agents and allies in the movement for diversity and inclusion.

21 people attended the event at Tottori University.
Christopher Hollis and Shirley Leane shared their knowledge and expertise with us on the subjects of both teaching philosophies and teaching methods.
First, Chris shared the importance of teaching English in English. He emphasized that teaching the students in the target language comes with a large number of benefits, such as exposing the students to more varied input and more complex forms of the language, enabling students to receive more feedback with regards to their communicative competency, and improving student motivation to use L2. Of course, there are some challenges involved with teaching English in English, such as student discipline, comprehension and time, and Chris went through how to address these challenges. He stated that through teaching our students language-learning strategies, such as how to use communications repair when communication breaks-down, or how to do circumlocution in order to explain things that they want to say in simple terms, we can empower our students to take control of their own language learning. He also showed a number of activities that can be used to help facilitate the teaching of English in English, such as “In Other Words” for practicing retelling skills, “Reverse Taboo” for practicing communication repair skills, and “Mystery Word Hints Quiz” for practicing circumlocution skills.
Next, Shirley Leane took us on a guided tour through the evolution of teaching philosophy with regards to teaching foreign languages. She covered the three major teaching philosophies of classical humanism, reconstructionism, and progressivism. All three philosophies come with a number of pros and cons, and Shirley believes that all three philosophies can bring something to the table when it comes to language instruction. She then explained the concept of task-based learning, which involves using the target language to carry out tasks, which not only makes language learning more interesting, but also improves linguistic competency as well. Shirley shared a number of real life tasks that she has assigned her students, and stressed how these tasks both make learning compelling and make for great learning tools in their own right.
Both presentations were incredibly informative, and exposed us to key concepts and information. We very much appreciated the knowledge that both speakers shared with us, and hope that they will be able to impart more knowledge to us in the future.

Teaching English in English: Strategies for Success
英語で行う英語教育 ~成功の秘訣とは?~
Presentation Abstract: Drawing on recent research in language teaching, I will demonstrate a variety of activities that can be used to effectively teach English using only English in the classroom. Inspiring learners to convey meaning using English, to use their imagination, and to interact in English with their peers (and teacher), these activities will also encourage students to take an active part in lessons and to enjoy the process of language learning. We will also discuss how teachers can overcome the need to use Japanese. I will then introduce some guiding principles for successfully teaching English in English and participants will work in groups on activities that suit their own specific teaching needs.
プレゼンテーション概要:最近の語学教育の研究を踏まえて、英語だけを使って効果的に英語を教えるためのさまざまな活動を実証します。具体的には、英語を使って意味を伝達し、想像力を行使し、学習者同士、及び教師と交流することを奨励すると同時に、学習者が積極的に参加し、語学を習得するプロセスそのものを楽しめるよう後押しできるようなアクティビティについてお話しします。また、教師がどのようにして日本語を使用しない状況を作るかについても議論する予定です。そして、英語で英語を教えるという目標を成功させるために指針となるガイドラインを紹介し、参加者は自分の具体的な教授ニーズに合ったグループ内でそれぞれ話し合いを行います。

Using language teaching history to advocate task-based teaching
タスクに基づく言語指導法の提案 ~言語教育史を鑑みて~
Presentation Abstract: My aim is to promote the value of task-based teaching. I will begin with a brief explanation of how the three main philosophies of education have influenced language teaching over the years. This will be followed by small group discussions about the advantages of each teaching style. I will then argue that the advantages of each philosophy are covered by task-based teaching. Finally, we will talk about how we can use task-based activities to develop students’ communication abilities in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
プレゼンテーション概要:このプレゼンテーションでは、タスクに基づく言語指導法の有用性について広く話をします。まずは、3つの主な教育哲学が長きに渡って、言語教育に大きな影響を持ってきたことについてお話します。それから、いくつかのグループに分かれて、それぞれの教授法のメリットについて話し合ってもらいます。その後、タスクに基づく言語指導法によって見出されるそれぞれの哲学の利点について説明します。最後に、タスクに基づく言語指導法に沿ったアクティビティで、どう学習者の4技能(リスニング、スピーキング、リーディング、ライティング)を伸ばすかについて、お話したいと思います。

Christopher Hollis's Bio Data:
Originally from the USA, Christopher Hollis has been teaching English in Japan for more than 8 years. Prior to teaching in Japan, he taught English to international students from around the world at the University of Illinois (USA). Chris holds an M.A. in TESL/TEFL from the University of Illinois. His research interests involve second language vocabulary acquisition, extensive reading, and Task Based Language Teaching (TBLT). Other interests of his include improving foreign language education in Tottori and exploring Japanese language and culture. Currently employed as the “Director of Foreign Language Education” at the Hokuei Board of Education in Tottori Prefecture, Chris is also the current president of the Tottori Chapter of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT).
クリストファー・ハリス氏 略歴: アメリカ、イリノイ州出身。日本にて8年以上の英語の教育指導経験を持つ。アメリカ、イリノイ大学にてさまざまな国籍を持つ留学生に、第二語言語として英語を教えた経験も2年以上持つ。イリノイ大学にて、第二言語としての英語教授法であるTESL修士号を取得。第二言語習得法、語彙習得、多読、タスク中心教授法(TBLT)を主とした英語教育法を研究し、鳥取県の英語教育の向上、そして日本文化と言語に対して強い関心を持つ。現在、北栄町教育委員会にて、外国語指導員兼主事(Director of Foreign Language Education)として教鞭をとり、また全国語学教育学会(JALT)鳥取支部の現支部長を務めている。

Shirley Leane is Assistant Professor at Tottori University and she teaches at the university and Fuzoku junior high school. She has taught students from over 30 different countries and strongly believes that given the same learning environment, Japanese students are no different to students of other nationalities. Shirley is the immediate former president of the Tottori Chapter of the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT).
シャーリー・リーン氏 略歴: 鳥取大学助教。現在、鳥取大学地域科学部付属中学校においても教鞭を取っている。30カ国以上での教育経験を持つ。その経験を通し、「同じ環境下において、日本人学生は他の国籍を持つ学生と何ら違いはない」という信念を持っている。全国語学教育学会(JALT)鳥取支部の前支部長。
