What is Splice and Why Use It?

Splice is a movie-processing app used to create and finalize videos. In a mobile learning environment, this app makes it simple and efficient to upload screen recordings from an iPad or iPhone to YouTube.

As instructors in a blended or mobile learning environment, creating and dispersing content can be a daunting task, and using every available tool is exactly why we have created this toolkit. This app was a game-changer for me in developing effective video content, and giving students access almost immediately.

How I Use This in My Classroom

I have used this in my classroom on every video I have uploaded to my YouTube channel. I rely on screen recordings to provide instructional examples to my students in a mobile- and flipped-learning environment. The iPad and iPhone make this very easy within the operating system, but the processing between the iPad and YouTube deletes the audio. Without Splice, I would not have been able to give my students' access to my videos and the examples I created for them.

This app can also be used for student-created content. In my high-school mathematics classroom, projects are created in which a mathematic concept is explored through a real-world example created in a small group in class. Then, the students are tasked to video the scenario, graph the data, and analyze the information in a video presentation to upload on to the class YouTube channel. Using Splice, my students and I are ensured success and access to our video content.

Special Considerations

This is a mobile app only, no main website use.
