Duolingo is a free mobile app for learning another language. It is a gamified learning tool. Users earn points for completing a lesson and lose a life when they make an error. It helps teach you to read, write, understand when hearing, and speak another language.
The Duolingo app is free to individual users. It uses short gamified lessons to help keep the user engaged in the learning. If you have enabled notifications, the app even prompts the user if the targeted use of the app has not occurred within the user selected timeframe. There are both iOS and Android versions of the app.
Duolingo also offers a free version for schools so teachers can assign lessons to students in Duolingo that they can complete on their mobile devices either in class or outside of class as part of blended learning.
A teacher must first create a Duolingo account, and then they can create a class. When creating a class, the teacher selects the target language (the language to be learned). The teacher then chooses how to invite the students to the class, either by sharing the link to the class, or by creating the students' accounts.
Once students join the class, the teacher can create assignments and activities the students need to complete. A dashboard shows the teacher the assignments and activities each student has completed. There is a built in language curriculum to help best use the application.
Duolingo can be used as part of a classroom activity/lesson either to introduce, practice, or review skills. It can also be used for blended learning by assigning it to be completed outside of class to give the teacher more time in class for practicing skills the Duolingo teacher dashboard indicates the students have not yet mastered, for additional in class practice time, or for individualized lessons during class time.
