What is Google Expeditions and Why Use It?

In Google Expeditions, users can explore augmented reality content on both iOS and Android devices. With little set-up required, users can experience AR and VR without any special equipment. For educators, classroom sets are available. Google Expeditions also includes a virtual tour creator. Using this tool, students can design their own "tours" or "field trips."

How Would I Use This in My Classroom?

In the public school classroom, abstract concepts can be represented in an interactive environment. For example, an AR experience available in Google Expeditions explores triangles and other geometric shapes, and could be used in an activity on transformations of objects in 2D and 3D space. This is especially relevant in increasing engagement and motivation for STEM education in traditional math classrooms, as well as putting student technology to good use.

Special Considerations

Google Expeditions can be used on a conventional computer to find and design experiences and tours. The Google Expeditions app is available for both iOS and Android devices. To enhance the experience, use this app with Google Cardboard and a virtual-reality headset.
