What is Shapes 3D and Why Use It?

Shapes 3D is an app available for iOS and Android devices that allows students to visualize and manipulate geometric shapes in the 3D space. The app break downs 3D objects into 2D shapes that can be visualized and manipulated outside of the app. (Think about it like unwrapping a gift or taking apart a box.) Students can also create their own 2D net and test it in the app. Shapes 3D can be used to manipulate the objects in the app, or projected onto a Merge Cube to interact with tangibly. The Geometry Drawing app that can also be downloaded, allows students to draw lines within the 3D geometric shapes to form new objects.

How Would I Use This In My Classroom?

In middle- and high-school mathematics, visualizing transformations in space is one of those concepts that is perfectly coordinated with manipulatives. In geometry mainly (but in algebra as well), this is a great app for students to interact with all forms of geometric shapes, and explore the different parameter changes.

It is noted from the reviews and descriptions of the app that is is best used as a reference resource, therefore students should have some familiarity with the material beforehand. Another

From Common Sense EDU:

In the classroom, Shapes 3D Geometry Learning could be an excellent supplemental geometry tool. As kids learn about three-dimensional solids, have them work in small groups to explore each shape. Ask them to create a graphic organizer to take notes about the attributes of each shape.

This app is accessible across all web browsers, computer and mobile devices.
