What is CoSpaces and Why Use It?

CoSpaces is an online resource for students and teachers to create their own virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. This tool combines creative thinking and problem solving with engineering and coding to provide a full STEM experience in the classroom.

CoSpaces also works with the Merge Cube, onto which AR can be projected and experienced.

Along with a user-friendly interface for students to create AR projects, but the system also supports an "all-in-one platform." CoSpaces has designed a dashboard to track student progress and whole-class management.

CoSpaces is available with a free account with basic features for 1 class, 1 assignment, and 30 students. A Pro account is also available, which allows user access to all of CoSpaces features, plus no limits on class sizes or space for projects.

How Would I Use This In My Classroom?

(from Common Sense Education)

"Teachers can use CoSpaces Edu across the curriculum. Students could use it to model their thinking about literature, create infographics, tell stories, or model scientific principles. A virtual museum could be created for sharing student work. To truly build out elaborate projects, students will need some deep coding instruction first.

CoSpaces Edu would make sense in a project-based learning class. Use the lesson plans for ideas to get started and then dive in to the forum to get more detailed help."

"CoSpaces Edu can be an excellent learning tool for students with a coding background. Bringing content to life in virtual reality using the programming languages can be highly motivating for students. However, users with limited coding chops may struggle to take full advantage of the platform because it doesn't offer coding tips.

CoSpaces Edu is a solid platform that doesn't onboard teachers or users as well as other coding platforms; building in scaffolded coding projects could help newbies and provide starting points for teachers. It would also benefit from tutorials and built-in help features that could assist beginners in moving to the next level."

Special Considerations

CoSpaces can be used "seamlessly" on any Apple or Windows computer, mobile devices, and is even compatible with the Google Chromebook. This makes CoSpaces extremely accessible to both teachers and students. The compatibility with the Merge cube is awesome; on the flip-side, some of the best AR effects are projected onto a Merge cube, so purchasing this in addition to using CoSpaces gets the most out of the app.
