Individual Work (do this ON YOUR OWN)
Task 1: Watch this video.
Task 2: Write 2-4 sentences about something, this can be about anything at all, but it should be appropriate for sharing publicly. An example is linked here.
From this point onwards you will be working in the following groups:
Aryaman, Anna & Josh (click here to see how this works)
Raksha & Kari
Yiannis & Zaim
Mac & Naomi
Sharon & Ploy
Viraj & Pin
Pear & Jedi
Johnny & Kayla
The tasks are designed so that you do not have to be working on them at the same time, but it would be nice to work simultaneously contacting each other through Zoom, Google Hangouts, Line or Skype.
If you're going online have a look at the Zoom Guidelines here (they generally apply to Google Hangouts, Line Skype etc as well)
Task 3. Now convert your 2-4 sentences into emojis using Emoji Keyboard, and email it to the other person in your group .
To do this you will need to choose emojis to represent the meanings in your 2-4 sentences, no words !
There is a translator called emoji translator - it wonβt help with this task, but it will help us with ToK (later).
Can you decipher my example?
Task 4. When you receive the Emoji paragraph from your pair try to translate it back into English. Write the English version down. Set up a Google Hangout or Zoom with your partner to share translated paragraphs, or record a quick video of your translation. After you have recieved your partner's emoji translation of your paragraph you can share the correct English version of your original paragraph with them.
Task 5. Run your original emoji paragraph through emoji translator. Compare your original English version with Emoji Translatorβs English version. Are there any similarities ? What does this tell us about the role of context in language ?
Task 6.Messages for Future Civilisations.
Real Life Situation: Messages for future civilisations.
The nuclear waste that we have stored over the last 60 years (& continue to produce & store today) will be radioactive for at least the next 100,000 years.
We need to find a way to warn future civilisations not to open the Nuclear Waste Canisters (usually stored at the bottom of deep mines).
These future civilisations will not necessarily speak / recognise any languages currently spoken on earth.
They wonβt necessarily be able to access the digital technologies that we use today. Paper (even plastic) will degrade over 100,000 years.
More information and details are in this (excellent) article.
Your task:
Produce a 2 page document explaining:
How will you communicate with people in the future not to open the stored nuclear waste ? (include diagrams etc).
Why have you come to this solution ? What alternatives did you consider, and why did you reject them.
ToK - what does this RLS tell us about language and knowledge ? What KQs (first & second order) can be developed from this.
