Given herein is a partial list of the various species to reside upon the surface levels of Tjarral. For creatures whose like we know, mere location is given; for those otherwise, a brief description is included.
Lactiles bear many similarities to mammals on Earth, including endothermy, a thick dermal layer (often covered in hair), and the production of milk from specialized glands.
Elaphs had their origins as small, rabbitlike creatures, but they have since expanded into various other niches, from deer-like browsers to desert grazers.
Pedalians were also small and rodentine once, and many still are—but there are also those, especially on Yandjee, who have grown to immense sizes, and bound across the landscape.
One of the two major predatory lineages, dacots started small, as rat-like scavengers. Now they roam Einir and Mocueyoh as some of the top predators of the modern era.
Barrs had their origins on the central archipelago, just like humans. Many are large browsers, some are grazers, and a few have taken to a life beneath the waves.
Piths are the group from which humans and their cousins arose.
Descended from a different lineage than lactiles, birds are among the few creatures to take to the air in powered flight.
These strange birds with claws in the middle of their wings started in the jungles, but have since taken on other niches in the mountains of Temacan.
Large, flightless birds with cassowary-like legs, sariamas are native to Yandjee, Eileiwa, and eastern Sayintha.
Cosallas are long-legged runners, brightly-plumed and frugivorous, native to the jungles of Svidhuni and Verna.
Cosallitas, sometimes called "flowers-of-the-air", are small and brightly-coloured, eating fruit and bugs. They are found in Eileiwa and Aheya, with a few in northern Yandjee.
A group of predatory birds, falcons are cosmopolitan.
Firewalkers are extremophiles, named for their brilliant plumage and found all along the shores of the Elephantine Ocean.
The six species of bosun birds, also called tropicbirds, are found across the Elephantine and Phoenician Oceans.
Firebirds, including phoenixes, are small and finchlike with bright colours, and are found across Mocueyoh.
Crows, ravens, magpies, and jays make up a cosmopolitan, largely omnivorous or insectivorous, clade.
Squat Folk are piths, related to humans, with larger mouths, longer arms, shorter legs, and bulkier bodies. They are herbivorous by nature, strong but gentle, and quite intelligent.
Location: Sayintha.
Cutters are dacots, sleek and speedy, which hunt in packs on the grasslands.
Location: Mocueyoh.
Hoppers are pedalians, from a different branch of the same group as the dacots. Excellent at desert survival, they store fat in their bodies for the long leap—and can lose 50% of their body weight safely.
Location: Yandjee.
