An island world, there are very few ways to travel from one place to another on Tjarral that don't involve boats or ships of some sort. Over the years, separate naval traditions have developed across the planet, each with their own highlights and typical styles.
Galleons are multi-decked (usually two- or three-decked but sometimes with four), with three or more masts (square rigs on at least the first two and lateen fore-and-aft rigs on the last one) and carvel planking. The ships are most prominent in the northern hemisphere, particularly in the fleets of Einir and Oma.
Typically a galleon will have a carrying capacity of between 200 and 400 people. Conditions may not be ideal.
The Dark Diver is the flagship of the Omaic fleet, helmed by archon Sotros of Hystarai. The ship weighs around 900 tons, and carries 66 crew, 20 gunners, 300 soldiers in full armour, and ten horses.
Captained by Noeganh of Paravarn, the Red Silk weighs in at 500 tons, with a full crew (acting as sailors and soldiers both) of 250, including 12 gunners. It remains the most prominent vessel in Paravarn's navy.
Junks tend to be more common along the coasts of Hathu and Gykken. While not as good at sailing with the traditional rigs, and usually made from softwood rather than hardwood, junks have internal divisions, inhabited or not, that help prevent flooding on long journeys.
Catamarans, ships with two parallel hulls, are a particular favourite of the Malehi-Treezh peoples in the east. Although harder to steer, they more than make up for this in stability on the water, especially in rough seas.
There are multiple makes of catamaran, but the typical ship is just about large enough to support between two and five people on a fairly long journey. The largest, however, is big enough to carry fifty people comfortably.
