Standard 7

INTASC Standard 7 is about planning for instruction and the application of pedagogy to ensure every student meets the goals that are set for them in instruction. A big part of this is interdisciplinary study, where students interact with cross-curricular materials so that their education is well rounded and they attain the ability to apply their understanding of any specific subject to a wide range of problems. For Pi Day, a holiday on March 14th (3/14) centered around the mathematical constant pi, I created a unit of 5 lesson plans over pi that could be used at the 7th grade level, in all 4 core subjects. The full unit is linked below, alongside 3 particular lesson plans from it. The first is entitled "The Science of Circles," which incorporates math and science into one lesson where students pretend to be scientists using the scientific method to obtain a value for Pi. The second, entitled "The Discovery of Pi Through the Ages" incorporates History and Math, as students learn about how Pi was found, and different values of it through history. Finally, the third lesson plan, entitled "18 ways Nasa uses Pi," is an English and Math lesson over reading comprehension, where students practice the reading comprehension skills as they read about the different ways NASA uses pi in a Nasa article.
